Opportunities

Brexit - no deal and data protection

Following Brexit, the rules about how personal data flows between the EU and the UK will change. The basis on which the UK will leave the EU has still to be decided. Organisations that rely on the transfers of personal data between the UK and the European Economic Area (EEA) may be affected.

Welsh Government offers further guidance here

Brexit Resilience Fund

Additional funds have been allocated to the Brexit Resilience Fund offering eligible businesses the opportunity to apply for funding of between £10,000 and £100,000 up to 50% of project costs.

Support for SME’s to maximise the power of Data

Data science for business We want to help small companies to see the power of their data and to realise the wide-ranging opportunities that data science offers. Organisations of all sizes are now able to capture and store data in huge volumes. This data often capture features of organisations and activities that were never previously recorded. In business, analysis of this data can identify patterns and features that provide new knowledge about a current or future product, market or service. This can lead to increased productivity and competitiveness in the market.

Working with the DIA The Data Innovation Accelerator (DIA) has been established at Cardiff University to support small companies to apply data science for the benefit of the business. The DIA has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through Welsh Government until August 2021. There’s no cash cost to the companies we work with. As we’re publicly-funded, there will be some paperwork for companies to complete.

The project can provide two forms of support to companies: a) free ‘data innovation health checks’ b) collaborative research projects, typically of 3-18 months in duration.

The DIA’s six in-house Data Scientists are skilled in a range of research techniques; who will work with companies to explore the nature of their data, the potential uses and insights to be gained from it, and the best scientific techniques to exploit a particular opportunity.
