'I had to sack my carers’: agonising choice between food and home support

Disabled people are having to choose between eating and paying for carers because of “catastrophic” social care charges, charities have warned.

The MS Society, Parkinson’s UK, Age UK and Mencap are urging the government to take action amid growing evidence that disabled and elderly people are rationing their social care because they cannot afford it, or taking the care and accruing thousands of pounds of debt.

Genevieve Edwards of the MS Society said: “We know care is becoming increasingly unaffordable for people with MS, potentially costing more than £110,000 in a lifetime. Faced with catastrophic care costs, some are forced to choose between care and other essentials, such as food and heating.”

Scrap the PIP 20-metre rule

We need to make our voice louder on the PIP 20-metre rule. The UK Government still hasn’t listened, and the rule is still failing people with MS.

If you can walk just one step over 20 metres, the UK Government says you don’t need higher level mobility support. So last year, 36,000 of us called on them to scrap the rule.

Just fill in your details here to send a message to Work and Pensions Secretary Amber RuddHR MP, to tell her now is the time to scrap the rule.

Scrap the Letters campaign

NHS Long Term Plan - General Survey

With growing pressure on the NHS – an ageing population, more people living with long-term conditions, and lifestyle choices affecting people’s health – changes are needed to make sure everybody gets the support they need.

The Government is investing an extra £20bn a year in the NHS. The NHS has produced a Long Term Plan, setting out all the things it wants health services to do better for people across the country. Now your local NHS needs to hear from you about what those changes should look like in your community.

You can take the survey here

Have Your Say - Review of the National Autism Strategy ‘Think Autism'

In April 2014 the government published ‘Think Autism’, a strategy for meeting the needs of autistic adults in England. The strategy supports the Autism Act 2009.

This year the Department of Health and Social Care, working with the Department for Education, will review the strategy and extend it to cover children as well as adults.
