Network Engagement

HEP awarded $1.2 million from the W.K Kellogg Foundation

The New Mexico Health Equity Partnership (HEP), an initiative at the Santa Fe Community Foundation, believes every New Mexican should have the opportunity to lead a healthy life, live in neighborhoods where children and families thrive, and have a say in the decisions that impact their lives.

HEP will continue to offer resources, training, and coaching to grassroots organizations to educate decision makers on local community health issues for children and families. HEP works collaboratively with residents to provide leadership building in their own communities—in areas that have been traditionally underrepresented by decision makers. The work is supported by a $1,200,000 three-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan. The W.K. Kellogg funding will enable HEP to continue to support community members to be their own champions and ensure residents have a powerful voice at the table. Residents most impacted by the issues have deeper insight into the challenges of their community, thus, supporting them to utilize data to develop their own narratives and solutions is essential. This leads to better policy and improved community health.

HEP will continue to support efforts by Doña Ana Communities United, McKinley Collaborative for Health Equity, and San Juan Collaborative to strengthen community leadership to inform policy. Additionally, we will support two new Health Impact Assessments (HIA) and offer small grant funding opportunities to current HIA teams in four counties. We look forward to on-boarding new HIA Technical Assistance Providers as part of the HIA Train the Trainers Program and incorporating a HIA Youth Toolkit and HIA Indigenous Toolkit into the HIA curriculum. In this newsletter, we share a small grant funding opportunity for current HIA teams in four counties to advance their efforts.

Policy & Advocacy

Congressional Visit

The San Juan Collaborative for Health Equity (SJCHE) works with five strategic teams to bring about social and economic change by implementing a Diné centered methodology for research and evaluation, developing community-based solutions, and devising policy recommendations for better health outcomes. The methodology is based on the notion of living in harmony, balance, and compassion. SJCHE has been conducting a Health Impact Assessment with the Tri-Chapters facing cultural, spiritual, and health impacts due to fracking. The photos above are from a U.S. Congressional visit with the Tri-Chapter team and Congresswoman Deb Haaland.

Join us for the Chainbreaker Collective Panel Series

As part of the “Nuestro Corazón: Respecting the Land, Healing our People, Transforming our Future” campaign join us for a panel series. The panels are designed to support Chainbreaker's organizing work to create a community-led People’s Plan for the city-owned former campus of the Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD) and policy recommendations that guard against displacement in the surrounding areas. The first panel focused on Equitable Community Engagement and the second will focus on Housing as a Human Right

HEP is part of the alliance of service providers, community members, arts organizations, social justice groups, and housing providers working to design a comprehensive community engagement campaign that will ensure that the people who are most impacted by Santa Fe’s Housing and Equity Crisis are be centered in the development process. Together, we will create a plan for the property that sets a new precedent for how Santa Fe grows. The People's Plan will be the first step toward respecting the land, healing the people and transforming the future. This campaign, the people, and the process will truly represent the Heart of Santa Fe!

Please check out Chainbreaker’s Health Impact Assessment report on Equitable Development and Risk of Displacement.

Capacity Building

HIA Follow-up Small Grants Funding Announcement!

Since 2012, HEP has supported 16 community groups to conduct HIAs. We recognize the complex work HIA teams are engaged in requires a long-term commitment from HEP. Via surveys and dialogues with HIA teams, we have heard that there is a need to support HIA teams after the HIA report is complete. Suggestions for ongoing assistance has included additional funding for monitoring and evaluation; updating maps and data; small group gatherings to educate decision makers and the public utilizing HIA recommendations; and creative communications products and arts to effectively communicate the HIA findings and recommendations. In 2019, HEP will offer follow-up small grants (~$2,500) and technical assistance to support HIA teams to advance their efforts in Bernalillo, Doña Ana, McKinley and San Juan counties. You can view the application here. Applications are due by May 31, 2019 @ 11:59 pm. You are encouraged to contact HEP about your idea before completing the application. We are happy to provide guidance and feedback.
