April 11, 2019 - Issue 120
Dear <<First Name>>,

My life these past six weeks has been a living embodiment of the message of this worship series. I have been learning what it means to un-busy my life – in a way that I didn’t choose, but that was an opportunity for profound change. My wife Judy was diagnosed with breast cancer not even a full two months ago. I kept saying I was going to take time off to be with her for her surgery and recovery, and yet it was the beginning of the season of Lent and (I thought) I had so much to do. So I tried to do it all, which is how I often function. It quickly became apparent that trying to do it all was too much. I’m grateful that the Board of Directors noticed my way of being and the stress I was experiencing. They asked me to take a full four weeks of family leave to help care for Judy and rest. I have to be honest. I didn’t think I needed four weeks off – I (at most!) only needed maybe two.

I was wrong.

They were right.

I did need more than two weeks to begin to rest and recover, as well as support Judy in her recovery. I also am grateful (and am aware of the privilege it is) that I pastor in an organization that allowed me to do this time of reflection and rest.

I’m learning that each season of my life offers a new and different opportunity to learn what it means to un-busy my life, to re-connect with an un-busy God. The practice of Sabbath, which is the theme of our worship this week, is a weekly way to check in about these things and make choices about the week ahead. And so I share this reading from Barbara Brown Taylor as you think about how you rest and take care of yourself.

“At least one day in every seven, pull off the road and park the car in the garage. Close the door to the toolshed and turn off the computer. Stay home not because you are sick but because you are well. Talk someone you love into being well with you. Take a nap, a walk, an hour for lunch. Test the premise that you are worth more than you can produce -- that even if you spend one whole day being good for nothing you will still be precious in God’s sight -- and when you get anxious because you are convinced that this is not so, remember that your own conviction is not required. This is a commandment. Your worth has already been established, even when you are not working. The purpose of the commandment is to woo you to same truth.”

The Peer Coach Academy of Colorado is holding a 4-day intensive training at PPMCC focusing on providing any interested individuals with the skills needed to guide, mentor and support anyone who would like to enter into or sustain long-term recovery from an addiction to alcohol or other drugs.  The training prepares participants by helping them to actively listen, ask really good questions, and discover and manage their own stuff.

The course takes place at PPMCC, April 30—May 3, 9:00am—4:30pm, and PCA is offering 2 Full Scholarships for the training to the PPMCC congregation.
