Dear Colleagues, I’m reaching out with a unique opportunity that is probably of your interest to your ASM Manitoba members.
 
The UofA Student Chapter of CWB Association has arranged to have Dr. Duane Miller from Lincoln Electric come and give his world famous course on design of welded connections. This course is a 2-day “greatest hits” of the 5-day class taught at Lincoln in Cleveland. This is a huge deal, since this is the only time in which it is taught outside Cleveland, and Duane Miller is retiring soon without a clear successor. This is not a “show and tell” class. He’ll give formulae and engineering procedures to design welded structures. As of today, he teaches at a level beyond what I teach in my welding class. There’s nothing like this class anywhere else in Canada or the US. He’ll also explain how to use the “Design of Welded Structures” and “Design of Weldments” books from Lincoln. This activity is the annual fundraiser of the UofA student chapter, with which they fund their attendance to welding conferences. Certificates for CE credits will be provided.
 
Two courses will be taught, one in Edmonton on May 6-7 (with focus on steel structures), and one in Calgary on May 9-10  (with focus on steel weldments). The student chapter has arranged for special pricing for people interested in both courses, and on a minimum price (just the cost of food) for all fellow students who want to come. We can give suggestions of lodging for those coming form other cities.
 
The students are making a monster effort for something that will be of much service to the welding community in Canada, and cannot be arranged in any other way. I’m also super-proud of them for their proactivity and initiative to fund their travel to welding conferences.
