Canadian Bridge a Suicide Magnet

Officials in St. Catherine's, Ontario are reporting an average of one suicide per month from the Burgoyne Bridge. Support for a barrier from the mayor and local public health officials is meeting resistance from some city council members who, predictably, cite myths such as, "They will just go someplace else." Dr. Mustafa Hirji, the public health director, is familiar with the research that refutes this, and continues to push for a barrier. Stay tuned.
Hartford Bridge Suicides

The Quechee Gorge Bridge near Hartford, Vermont and spanning the Ottauquechee River, is the site of at least 14 suicide deaths since 2007. State transportation officials are looking into replacing the temporary fence installed last fall in an attempt to mitigate the problem. So far, no specific designs or plans have been released, as far as we know.
Meanwhile, in Tennessee...

The Tennessee legislature passed and the governor approved a resolution calling the Natchez Trace Bridge a public health hazard that needs a barrier to stop further suicides. The resolution is being forwarded to Congress because the bridge is the responsibility of the National Park Service. There have been at least 25 suicides from the bridge in the past 10 years.
Bird Spikes Not the Answer So Far

Early reports, which are mostly anecdotal, indicate that the installation of bird spikes on top of the short railing of San Diego's Coronado Bridge to prevent suicides isn't working. The spikes were installed as a temporary measure while Caltrans considers a permanent solution. The problem is that prior to the spikes, people stood on the railing before jumping, giving police a chance to intervene. With the spikes, people are jumping without hesitation, frustrating the police who otherwise might be able to get to them in time.
