Please subscribe to receive progress updates on the Downtown Programme

Week ending 14 April 2019

The Downtown Programme will create a generous and welcoming destination along the water’s edge that is recognisably Tāmaki Makaurau. Key projects are being accelerated within the programme. Subject to resource consent they will be completed by 2021, in time for the America’s Cup.

It’s a bit quieter on site at the moment and you may have noticed fewer contractors on Quay Street.

With the utilities trench completed, over the next couple of months companies such as Chorus and Vodafone will complete their installation of underground services (communication and power) through the newly installed ducts, and we will complete the installation of a new stormwater line at the western end of Quay Street.

We are also using this time to prepare for the next phase of construction. In late May, we expect to start work on the big, transformational Downtown Programme projects; strengthening Quay Street’s seawall, enhancing the streetscape, and redeveloping the ferry basin. You can anticipate a flurry of activity once these get underway.

In the meantime, this weekly newsletter will keep you up to date on progress, how you may be affected and who you can contact.

Current Project Phase
Stormwater drainage installation

CONSTRUCTION: April to Mid-May 2019

WORKS INVOLVED

Stormwater Drainage:
Involves pavement excavation and concrete cutting works and temporary relocation of cycle lane onto the footpath between Lower Hobson Street and Lower Albert Street.

Underground Services:
Service providers (Chorus and Vodafone) are onsite to feed the new services (power and communications) through the new ducts installed during the utility trenching works. These works are quiet but do involve a small temporary site set up.

Traffic management:
Quay Street reduced to one lane each way. Cycle lane is maintained but may shift slightly due to works. Footpath access maintained but may be narrower in areas due to works.

Mitigation:
Noise fencing will be in place during concrete cutting and other loud activities. Traffic Controllers onsite to assist movements.

Upcoming Key Dates

Vector Quay Street ducting works

Ongoing to mid-May 2019

Vector works continue on the eastern end of the site to reinforce the network along Quay Street and to strengthen the reliability of electricity supply to the area.

Traffic management plans will be in place to ensure the smooth flow of traffic during these times and every effort will be made to minimise disruption.

Project Works Along Quay Street

STORMWATER DRAINAGE

Quay Street northern edge: Lower Hobson Street to Lower Albert Street
Ongoing until mid-May 2019

Installation of a permanent storm water line continues along the northern side of Quay Street (between Lower Hobson Street and Lower Albert Street).
  • The first manhole has now been installed.
  • Pipe lay installation continues east to west
  • The cycle lane has been relocated onto the footpath between Lower Hobson Street and Lower Albert Street during these works. Pedestrians and cyclists will be separated safely using a traffic snake and hit sticks.
  • Removal of pavement using 14T excavators. If concrete blocks are identified under Quay Street a breaker may need to be used.
  • Intermittent short term concrete cutting required throughout works.
  • The right turn in and left turn out of Princes Wharf will be maintained.

Please be assured noise fencing will be in place during all noisy activity and vehicle/pedestrian access to buildings and driveways will be maintained at all times.

INSTALLATION OF TEMPORARY ACTIVATION SPACE

This Saturday a new temporary public space will be popping up on Quay Street outside the Ferry Building.

UTILITY SERVICE PROVIDERS ONSITE

Chorus have established small temporary sites in this area to feed and joint new services through newly installed ducts. No noise disruption expected.

Over the next two years, activities and movement along and around Quay Street and the Ferry Basin will be affected by Downtown Programme construction as we work towards completion by 2021.

Please continue to drive with caution and be alert to the right turn restrictions that have been put in place to maintain traffic flow along Quay Street (see map below).

We are constantly monitoring the traffic flow and making adjustments where required, so please maintain awareness of any traffic layout changes as well as other road users and pedestrians.

TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS TO NOTE

  • No right turn into or out of Lower Albert Street
  • No right turn into Commerce Street from Quay Street
  • No right turn into Gore Street from Quay Street
  • No right turn into Britomart Place from Quay
  • Right turn permitted into Queens Wharf

The top photo shows trench excavations underway for the storm water pipe installation works.

The photo below is the first manhole installed. This manhole is 3m deep.

As part of these works, the cycle lane has been temporarily shifted onto the footpath between Lower Hobson Street and Lower Albert Street.

Works are on track to be complete mid-May.

WATCH THIS SPACE!

The new furniture for our new temporary public space popping up on Quay Street on Saturday is progressing well!.

Outside the Ferry Building you’ll find a spot to pause, relax, eat your lunch…….enjoy!

Guess who's now open for breakfast?!
Dirty Laundry has identified a niche in the local dining echelon; an uber-cool, fancy-but-not-too-fancy eatery that the surrounding workers and passers-by can all enjoy.

They are located on the corner of Quay Street and Lower Albert Street and are now open from 7am till late, seven days a week. Speaking from experience, they make a damn good coffee!

Now they just need to start selling merch...I'd definitely buy a t-shirt.
