Weekly news for nonprofit news leaders and supporters

INN welcomes the following new members to its nonprofit news network:

Outlier Media is an innovative news service in Detroit that texts directly with readers about rental and housing data, and also produces accountability reporting about housing and utilities. Sarah Alvarez launched the outlet in 2016 after looking for ways to better fill information gaps for low-income news consumers.

WJCT News is a public media station in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Utah Investigative Journalism Project reports from Salt Lake City, typically by collaborating with other local and regional outlets, and providing resources and training to journalists trying to do investigative stories in Utah.

H20 Radio is based in Denver and produces national radio stories about water. It distributes audio content to radio stations nationally. H2O is led by executive producers Jamie Sudler and Frani Halperin.

Foothills Forum is an innovative news publication that starts with community engagement — surveying area residents to identify their top public issue concerns, commissioning neutral research and hiring top-quality journalism talent to then produce in-depth coverage of the issue and the research. Foothills Forum partners with the for-profit Rappahannack News to publish the results of its projects.

Joining INN as a provisional member is SJVWater, a startup focused on water issues in the San Joaquin Valley.

Only One Week Left for INN Days 2019 Early Registration

Early registration to INN Days, INN's biggest event of the year, ends Monday. INN Days will be held at The Four Seasons Houston on June 12 and 13, two blocks from the IRE hotel, at a special room rate of $175 per night. INN members can register for INN Days 2019 during early registration for just $119 through Monday, April 22, a $30 savings off regular registration pricing. Registration will increase starting next Tuesday. This event is open to anyone interested in advancing the field of nonprofit news.

This is the first time the event will be held at its own hotel. Book your hotel room now by visiting the "hotel" tab on the INN Days page. Only a limited number of rooms remain.

INN Days 2019 is generously sponsored by John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation as well as a generous circle of foundations providing general support for INN programs.

INN Days 2019 will include NewsMatch Day sponsored by Knight Foundation, INN's 10th Anniversary reception, plus peer group meetups and other networking opportunities. This year's conference features sessions focused on major gifts fundraising, local news collaborations, and building an effective sponsorship sales campaign.

A special session about turning passive audiences into first-time donors featuring leaders in public media will conclude the event. Lindsy Goldberg, program manager at WBUR, will demonstrate how WBUR’s BizLab collaborates with public radio stations across the country to test new ways of raising funds. Presenters from participating radio stations will then share their learnings from their experiments and share how others can replicate their successes inside nonprofit news organizations.
