Hello!

Around this time for the past decade or so, I've been sending out invitations for my annual spring show at Village Studios. This year is different. Since last fall, I've been painting portraits, and because my commissions will keep me busy for awhile longer, Martha and I have decided to mount my annual show this fall instead. So look for your invitation after the summer is over.

In the meantime, here's what's been keeping me occupied:

Royal Society of Portrait Painters' Annual Exhibition

Self-Portrait with Tarnished Jug
Egg tempera on panel, 24 x 16"

Last fall I had a mastectomy to treat breast cancer. A few days after the surgery, I started painting this self-portrait. After I posted the finished work on Twitter, I was invited by artist Mark Roscoe to show it at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters' annual exhibition at Mall Galleries in London, UK. The RP opens to the public on May 9th and runs until May 24th.
The image above is a detail. To see the entire portrait, please visit the RP website for a preview of the exhibited works. The artists are listed in alphabetical order.

Or you can visit my website.

Sometimes I put a portrait aside for awhile. This one was started in 2015, and I finally finished it this past winter. The background is painted with genuine lapis lazuli pigment, more costly during the Middle Ages than gold, and now only slightly more affordable.

A future unveiling

In mid-June my most recent
commission will be unveiled at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. I can't show you the full portrait until after the event, but I think it's okay to share this detail. The painting is in oil on linen, and the subject is Roy Romanow, the university's chancellor.

If you just can't wait
until the fall...

I've donated this painting to the
First Friday in May Gala at the Gallery which will be held on May 3rd at Gallery Stratford. Please show your support for our local public gallery. You could go home with this!

And, finally...

Even though I'm not having a show this spring, Tanya Zaryski is.
Please join her for the opening at Village Studios
on the afternoon of May 25th.
