The Gathering on the Green was a fantastic afternoon catch-up for Quintililan families.
Principal

Dear Parents,
As we come to the end of Term One, I have been reflecting on what makes our school such a vibrant and exciting place for learning. One of the key thoughts that keeps popping into my mind is the attitude and approach that our teachers, education assistants and administration staff bring to work every day.

From the Board

Dear Families,

This week, we celebrate the end of another successful school term at Quintilian. We have welcomed a number of new families, attended many incursions and excursions and started on new learning journeys with our dedicated teachers and support staff.

We have enjoyed a number of fabulous events as a community, the latest held by our Year 6 class last Friday night when a huge crowd took part in the “Shine Like A Diamond” disco. Many parents even putting on their sparkle for the night! A huge thank you to Anne, Susan W and all the Year 6 parents for a great evening where our community could come together and enjoy our school friendships.

Waste Audit

On Friday 22 March the Year 3 and 4s had the wonderful task of partaking in a whole school waste audit. The audit took place after lunch and involved the children collecting all the bins from around the school and sorting it into a variety of categories including whole fruit, food scraps, paper, single use plastic, chip/biscuit wrappers among others.
The most astonishing results included:
  • Whole fruit – 14 pieces
  • Chip/biscuit packets – 66 in total
  • Food scraps – 3kg was put into the compost that afternoon
  • Single use plastic – 22 lunch containers as well as a large collection of cling film
  • Other rubbish (not paper) – two large tubs

After a class discussion on how well we all behave towards waste and recycling we  discussed ways we could each improve. The students all decided they would make sure produce bought by parents would not be put in single use plastic bag, they would act as the Sustainability Police force. They agreed to tell their parents what they would like in their lunch boxes to help reduce waste and would take all un-eaten whole fruit home.
Year 3s working in the school garden.
Wast Free Tuesdays
As a result of the waste audit and in order to enhance the children’s awareness of our environment and our need to care for it, the school will be introducing a WASTE FREE TUESDAY.

Every Tuesday from Tuesday 30 April 2019 at Quintilian School will be a Waste Free Tuesday. Everything in a waste free lunch can be eaten, reused, recycled or composted. There's nothing left to throw out.

A waste free lunch involves no throwaway packaging: food is put in reusable containers rather than wrapped in disposable, single-use packaging and drinks in a refillable bottle. Any leftover food can then be saved for later consumption.

Drama with Year 2
What a wonderful Term I've had working with Year 2. They have been great fun showing off their acting skills and on the spot Improvisations.

There is certainly a lot of talent here and I can't wait to work with them later in the year. If any other teacher's would like to book Drama Sessions for their Years, contact Debbie, but hurry as space is limited.
Thanks

Principal cont'd:

Our staff are genuinely excited about working in education and wish to make a life-long difference to the children entrusted to our care. They approach their daily work with great enthusiasm and a joyful and positive attitude which is not always easy, given the complexities and challenges of a school environment, and yet they do it exceptionally well. I believe that it is the positivity, enthusiasm and energy of our staff that sets the tone for our school. In so many ways, ‘we reap what we sow’.

We Reap What We Sow
A wise old person was sitting in the sun on a bench outside school. Along came a new young student who said, “I have just moved to this town. Please could you tell me what this school is really like?” The wise old person thought carefully, and, after a moment’s silence replied, “Tell me about your previous school. What was that like?” The new young student didn’t hesitate. “It was pretty boring. Nothing much ever happened. The teachers weren’t any good. We’d muck about most of the time. Nothing to do. Yeah, overall, just boring.” The wise old person said, “Well, I think that’s pretty much what you will find here.”

A short time later another young new student came along and asked the wise old person, “I have just moved to this town. Please could you tell me what this school is really like?” Again the wise old person thought carefully, and, after a moment’s silence replied, “Tell me about your previous school. What was that like?” The new young student didn’t hesitate. “It was great. Lots to do all the time. Terrific teachers. Great fun. Good friends. It was a really good place to be and I loved it.” The wise old person replied, “Well I think that’s pretty much what you will find here.”

I wish all Quintilian families the holiday they are seeking and look forward to seeing you all in a couple of weeks.

From the Board cont'd:
Walking around the school it is amazing to see the incredible art displays and work from all of our students. I was lucky to be part of the School Open Day a couple of weeks ago and spoke with a number of prospective parents who were in awe of the fabulous work on display. They commented on the incredible ‘feel’ that is Quintilian and how happy and engaged our students were in a range of different activities; from Lisa’s Year 1s having a story on the fort, music lessons with Michelle, computer lab work, others undertaking their various lessons and so much more. It made me very proud as a parent and board member to hear these glowing comments by parents who had never seen our school before.

This brings me to the work of your School Board as it is one of our many roles to ensure that this "Quintilianess" is captured and maintained for our current families and those that follow into the future. To this end your Board held a very constructive and busy meeting last week to discuss how we move forward on this, amongst many other topics. There are some wonderful challenges and experiences ahead of us and it was a pleasure to hear the thoughts, ideas and wisdom that was shared as we planned for the year ahead. We welcomed Board members Dean Roberts and David Waterhouse to their first meeting and confirmed, with thanks for their support and time, the positions of Rebecca Potts (staff) and Caitlin Sim (parent) on the Events Committee, Susan W (staff) and Emmy (staff) onto the Strategic Planning Sub-Committee and Rachel (registrar) assisting on the Marketing Sub-committee.

The Board members will spend the next month working in our Sub-committees to review our current situation, and put a detailed plan together for presentation at the Board meeting in May. There were a number of specific targets set for each Sub-committee as well as the consideration of how each group will work towards achieving broader Board Goals over the next 12 months. These included:

Governance will review the processes of the Board looking closely at the Board's own Code of Conduct and how this links with that of the Staff and Parent Codes of Conduct and Communication currently in place at the school. We will also review the Board Charter and Constitution in light of the new legislation that applies to Quintilian.

Finance will review our first term situation as we have experienced a small growth in student numbers. This will include capital expenditure, on-going maintenance and prepare for the new School Budget development later in the year.

Strategic Planning will review the current plan in context of those programs achieved and how we ensure their high level of continuity in the school. Our Social and Emotional Learning focus has been just one achievement but other short-term goals have also been met and these now need to be revisited and the plan updated. The committee will review the communication policies of our school in light of recommendations from the School Re-Registration last year. More information on this will come to all our community shortly.

Events are busy finalising the plans for the Family Rottnest Weekend in May and the SciTech night to be held on June 8th - put this fun night into your calendars. Plans are also underway for Term 3 and 4 with the Biennial Christmas Market and Twilight Carols just one exciting event to come. Planning is also underway for Term 1, 2020 already!

Marketing have in place a plan for this calendar year and this will be reviewed in perspective of all the exciting and new events, camps and other activities now in the schedule. How we communicate to both our own and the wider community will be a key focus this month. The ever increasing ability to post and share brings enormous opportunities but with it a necessary review on how the school reacts to news and posts that are not endorsed by the school - this will be a key discussion moving forwards for the entire Board.

To assist with this Tim, Ezekiel and I attended the Association of Independent Schools of WA (AISWA) Briefing the Board Conference last Saturday. We woke early to get to the Swan Valley for an 8.15am start and spent the day with 338 other Board members, Principals and senior staff from independent schools throughout Western Australia. We each attended 6 workshops on varying topics. We all came away with many new ideas and a clear picture of the importance of the Board’s focus on good governance, ensuring a strong understanding of our own school’s culture and ethos, and long term strategic planning.

One of the Key Note Speeches on the day reviewed the recent Federal Budget and the upcoming Federal Election. There were a number of points regarding the educational priorities of the various political parties and how this will actually impact our school. The Head of the Independent School Council of Australia (ISCA) spoke with great clarity on the various possible outcomes and went beyond the current media hype as to the actual implications which was both interesting and informative.

A special thanks to our parents, staff, families and friends. We value your support.

We now head into term break where we have a couple of significant holidays, those of Easter and ANZAC Day. So whatever your plans, I wish you safe travels and enjoyable times with family and friends.

........remember this is actually the perfect time of year to put all those eggs in one basket.

See you next term,
Sue-anne
