Ward 4 meeting 
Special topic: Hotel and motel licensing ordinance 
David Skilling and Barb Franks, City Council members for Ward 4, will meet with residents from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at Green Mountain Presbyterian Church, 12900 W. Alameda Parkway. A Lakewood Police Department Community Action Team agent will discuss the new licensing program for hotels and motels in Lakewood. An open forum will follow on any topic of interest or concern to the community.

City Council Update


Monday, April 15: 7 p.m., Study Session with the National Volunteer Month proclamation and a presentation of the City Attorney’s Office report.

Roundup from the April 8 Regular City Council Meeting: City Council referred the residential growth initiative to Lakewood voters and set a July 2 special election. Council also set the April 22 Regular City Council Meeting for public hearings on the following items: authorizing $300,000 for the July 2 special election, approving the realignment of an easement in Hodgson Park and updating the city’s construction noise regulations. The applicant for the proposed rezoning of 3113 S. Wadsworth Blvd. and for vacating the right of way for a portion of Ammons Street asked for the items to be postponed until June 10, and council approved the request. Council had public hearings on the following items and took the following actions:
  • Council approved endorsing the projects and funding levels for the annual Community Development Block Grant program. 
  • Council approved bringing the last parcels of Hayden Park on Green Mountain into the city’s boundaries. 
  • Council approved rezoning property at 14100 W. Exposition Place.
  • Council approved spending a grant on the West Colfax Avenue Pedestrian Safety Project.
  • Council approved spending a grant for work on the O’Kane Farm Historic District. 
  • Council approved spending $100,000 to fund the Porchlight, a Family Justice Center.

Carmody Park earns Starburst Award
The renovation of Carmody Park that includes adding the universal playground for children of all abilities and the Outdoor Fitness Zone in partnership with Centura Health received a 2019 Starburst Award from the Colorado Lottery. The award recognizes excellence in the use of Lottery proceeds for community and conservation projects. Learn more about the park at Lakewood.org/CarmodyPark.

Development Dialogue Committee meeting
The next meeting of City Council's Ad Hoc Committee for the Development Dialogue will be 6-8 p.m. May 1, in the Cabinet Room at the Civic Center, 480 S. Allison Parkway. When the agenda is posted, it will be available at Lakewood.org.

Play area contributions to be recognized
Come celebrate a new play area at Bear Creek Lake Park with Mayor Adam Paul and city staff. The Exploration Ridge play area ribbon-cutting will be at 3 p.m. April 19 to honor the Alameda Kiwanis club for its contributions to Lakewood. Beginning in 2017, the city became a partner with the club to build a natural play area next to the visitor’s center at the park. The club has donated $30,000 and volunteered numerous work days to build the play area. Play features include a bear sculpture that is climbable, a flagstone maze and a gazebo, with installations of a sand pit and more to occur later this year. Learn more at Lakewood.org/BCLP.


Kids lead the way
 
Kids will be teaching kids –- and most likely even the adults -– about sustainability at Lakewood’s annual Earth Day Celebration, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. April 27, at the Lakewood Heritage Center, 801 S. Yarrow St. Dunstan Middle School students will display their version of Lakewood’s Sustainability Plan that they wrote and illustrated. Electronic recycling event
In conjunction with Lakewood’s Earth Day Celebration, the 3RC Foundation will host its annual e-waste recycling event for the public to safely recycle electronics. The event will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on April 27 at 777 S. Yarrow St., which is next door to the festival. Fees apply, and details are available at Lakewood.org/EarthDay.

Anniversary trivia
Learn something interesting about Lakewood by participating in the weekly trivia questions available on Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary website. This week’s question: What animal does a sign warn patrons about in Mountainside Park? Answer it at Lakewood.org/50.

Fitness Court coming to Addenbrooke
The National Fitness Campaign has awarded $30,000 to the city as part of a grant program designed to activate public spaces with outdoor fitness facilities. The grant will bring the Fitness Court to Addenbrooke Park, and it will provide a state-of-the-art digitally connected platform that provides guidance on fitness activities and workouts for park users. Good News Jeffco
The Jefferson County Good News Coalition will have the 29th Annual Good News Breakfast at 6:59 a.m. April 30, at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 W. Sixth Ave. The breakfast recognizes 10 honorees for their positive impact in the community. Details at GoodNewsJeffco.org.

West Colfax Lately Luncheon 
The fifth annual West Colfax Lately Luncheon is 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on April 25. This is an annual celebration of the energy and momentum happening along West Colfax Avenue in Lakewood, and it honors the LEGEND and MOMENTUM Award winners. Details and tickets available at WestColfax.org.

Belmar Library redesign
Attend a community meeting about the redesign of the Belmar Library to learn how the facility will be remodeled. The meeting is 6:30-8 p.m. on April 25 at the library, 555 S. Allison Parkway. Learn more at JeffcoLibrary.org/Belmar-Remodel.

Help older adults remain independent 
The Seniors’ Resource Center invites you to make a difference in your community by providing rides for older adults. This volunteer opportunity is great for retirees, stay-at-home parents and those with flexible schedules. Rides to medical appointments, the grocery store and other critical needs are provided during daytime hours during the week. Fossil site celebrates anniversary
Dinosaur Ridge is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a four-day series of events that celebrates this world-class paleontological site. Dinosaur Ridge on the west end of West Alameda Avenue gets more than 230,000 visitors a year, and it will celebrate with Drinks and Dinos, a Walk with a Scientist and more, all beginning on April 25.
