Free Fishing Days

Indiana  residents do not need a fishing license or a trout/salmon stamp to fish the state's public  waters on FREE FISHING DAYS.

Indiana's 4 FREE FISHING DAYS are April 20, May 18, and June 1 and 2, 2019.

On all other days, only youth (age 17 and younger) and a few other special anglers are exempt from the license requirement.  Check out the DNR website.

In Remembrance

Beverly Robbins, a longtime summer resident on Dewart Lake, died peacefully on January 8, 2019.  She and her husband of 64 years, Ed Robbins who survives her, enjoyed living in their distinctive bright red cottage on D 23 since l972.  Ed and Beverly loved spending summers there with family and neighbors.  Their daughters, Ann Robbins, Kay Cochran and her husband Mac, also live on Dewart Lake, as well as her niece Kim Freeman and her husband Darwin, and her nephew Junior Barkdull.  Niece Nan Phillips and her husband Bob live on Lake Wawasee.  She was loved and is missed by all who knew her on Dewart Lake.

Carol Clark, Lane 15, passed away March 7th.  She was the wife of Dr. Jack Clark, who survives.  They had been married for 52 years.

Martha “Marty” Whitehead Scearce, born in 1931, passed away December 9, 2018.  Her parents, Bert and Hazel (Dewart) Whitehead, developed the lakefront on D15 long the east side of Dewart Lake in the late 1930's and built one of the first cottages along that shore.  Lewis Dewart (1826-1889), for whom the lake was named, was Marty's great grandfather. She was married at her family's lake cottage in 1952 to Donald Scearce, who preceded her in death in 2010.  Don's architectural engineering firm, Scearce & Associates, and later Scearce Rudisall Architects and Engineers, were based in Warsaw.  Marty was the office manager for many years.  Don was a past president of the DLPA, woodcarver and Kiwanis member.   Marty and Don built the current lake home in 1996 and lived there year round in their retirement years. They were members of the North Webster United Methodist Church, world travelers, bridge players and gardeners.  Marty was a writer, genealogist, historian, artist, volunteer and member of P.E.O. Organization.  Her roots ran deep in the Syracuse area.  Her ancestors include the Whiteheads, Dewarts, Mocks, Guys, Kirkendalls, Stuards/Stewarts, Blanchards and Striebys, all early 1800 settler families from PA and OH.  Marty and Don's daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Stan Rice, continue to enjoy the lake home on beautiful Dewart Lake.  Susan, her brother Gary, and their families, wish to thank all the lake friends for their outpouring of kind words, love, condolences and support.

Address Correction Requested

Letter from the President

Winter has passed, at least as far as the calendar states, and the ice is gone from our beautiful lake.

We are beginning to see some of our summer residents returning from down south, and many robins have been sighted all around. Those who stayed here this winter survived a Polar Vortex!

Winter was not easy on some of our residents.  Ann Robbins lost her mother in January, and our good friend and Lane Director, Ralph Blust, is currently at Millers in Syracuse.

As in past years, your association will be sponsoring the roadside cleanup (April), then the neighborhood garage sales (May), followed by our annual meeting at Quaker Haven, the popular chicken barbeque and golf event all taking place in June.

The lake has been stocked with walleye fingerlings, and the fish will be harvest size at 16 inches.

The new directories will be done soon, and your Lane Directors will be distributing them.  We ask that you look these over and let us know if any corrections are needed.

We look forward to a safe and delightful summer!  See you on the lake!

Chip Wallstead, President

Dewart Lake Protective Association
