This month, South Fulton Councilman khalid formally introduced a proposal to spark economic development on Old National Highway. The entity, known as a Downtown Development Authority (DDA), is a bond financing tool created by the Georiga State Legislature to help revitalized economically-depressed commercial districts.

But the appearance of the word "Downtown" in the entity's title set off a firestorm of criticism from some South Fulton residents, who feel Old National is "too ghetto" to represent the city.

"The DDA isn't about naming Old National as South Fulton's cultural center, it's a financing tool to build revenue-generating, commercial developments at minimal cost to our taxpayers," a clearly frustrated Councilman khalid said of the April 9 meeting. "It's tragic that residents of the Blackest City in America would fall into elitist attitudes about the Southside of their own city, after being victims of a North vs. South caste system that disenfranchised citizens of South Fulton county for decades."

The City of South Fulton has only one hotel within its city limits. The City of College Park, next door, has 34 hotels within one mile of the airport. And more are being planned. While South Fulton delays a decision on developing Old National, the City of College Park is planning the largest mixed-use development south of I-20 in Atlanta history"Every day we don't take action we're giving money away," says khalid.

Councilman khalid has been pushing for an Old National DDA since first introducing the idea with Georgia Municipal Association Development Authority expert Dan McRae at an Old National Economic Development Summit in July 2018. khalid & McRae have been meeting since 2018; and khalid has broached the issue with South Fulton's Mayor, Council, City Manager & Economic Development Director on numerous occasions over the past 9 months.

Yet at last Tuesday's meeting, some Councilmembers claimed to be "caught off guard" about khalid's DDA proposal. Others Councilmembers alleged that, while they knew of the proposal, they felt the issue needed more study.
Sunday, April 14 • 7PM
Burn Lounge
3461 Roosevelt Hwy, 30349
Councilman khalid was not the only individual to take umbrage at some of the remarks made about the legendary South Fulton street. Popular Old National Entertainment (O.N.E.) Promoter Torrey Tomlinson & community activist Marcus Coleman took to social media to defend Old National.

Torrey and his wife T
iffaney Tomlinson host a regular, Sunday night talk show at South Fulton's Burn Lounge. The show, whose discussions usually center around relationships and other current topics in popular media, caters to an under-50 demographic which is generally unaware of South Fulton politics.  The husband & wife team are dedicating this Sunday's entire show to a conversation about economic development on Old National. Councilman khalid will be a guest on the show.

2020 Census Now Hiring
Every 10 years, the United States conducts a count of all citizens & residents, known as the U.S. Census. This count is used by the federal government to disburse grants and other federal funds based on each city, county and state's population. The results of U.S. Census are also used to draw maps of voting districts. The 2020 Census will have a huge effect on the future of South Fulton. The count will determine funding for construction of new schools, and programs like housing assistance and food stamps.

President Trump has proposed funding cuts and other changes to the U.S. Census that could make it harder for some cities to get an accurate count of their residents. As a result, many cities have already begun preparing for the 2020 Census, including South Fulton. The U.S. Census office has already begun hiring paid part-time & full-time workers to help with the counting of citizens.

You can earn up to $20 per hour helping to ensure every person living in South Fulton gets counted! Read more about how the Census works and apply for Census jobs at the links below. Tell hiring supervisors that South Fulton Councilman khalid sent you.
