Asia-Pacific Regional Course of Study Advisory Committee

David serves as the chair of the A-P RCOSAC and led the annual meeting March 28-30. This committee is made of representatives from around our region. The focus of the group is to strategize how to encourage and develop education and training for ministers in the Church of the Nazarene. This year, the group spent two days meeting at Korea Nazarene University and then one day at a local hotel in the city of Cheonan. We appreciate the hospitality of KNU, the largest Nazarene University in the world, and Dr. Im, the president. We were also spoiled by the hospitality and help of Dr. Park Un Tae, a member of our committee and pastor in Seoul. We were able to spend our last day in Seoul worshipping at Dr. Park's church and seeing some of the city. The weather was cold but the friendship and fellowship was warm. This year we reviewed submissions of the courses of study from several regional colleges and began to strategize how to develop lay ministers through our educational systems.

Metro Manila PALCON

Both Rhonda and David spoke at the Metro Manila Pastors and Leaders Conference (PALCON) retreat April 1-3. Rhonda's theme was How to Avoid Burnout in Ministry. David spoke on Pastors and Finances, Pastors and Families, and Pastors and Technology. The District Advisory Board had open forums each night on these themes and on integrity in the ministry. The Metro Manila district is visionary and planting many new churches each year. Metro Manila is a massive area of at least 20 cities approaching 30 million people. The district now has over 100 churches and 8000 members. District Superintendent Arnel Piliin has a strong vision to plant more churches. This district now has two extension education centers and will soon open a third. We enjoyed meeting with the pastors, many of whom we know and see often and many who were David's students at the seminary and are now leaders on the district. You can listen to a recording of one of our presentations if interested (http://acky4.com/wp/sermons/pastors-and-technology/).

Pray for APNTS Staffing Needs

Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary where our Field Office is located and were we used to serve is going through a big transition time. Five of the professors are leaving. Drs. Bruce and Peggy Oldham have accepted a new position of pastor of a church in Florida. So, APNTS will be looking for a new president in about a month. Professor of ministry, Dr. Clark Armstrong and his wife Connie are retiring and returning to Missouri where he will be a pastor. Dr. Carol Bestre, professor of Christian Education, will be returning to her home area of Baguio. Later this year, missions professor Dr. Lynn Shmidt and his wife Sherrie are retiring. So, lots of holes to fill. If you know someone with a doctoral degree and who has a call to teach in a mission setting, they can contact the Academic Dean, Dr. Dick Eugenio (deugenio@apnts.edu.ph).

Graduation at Philippine Nazarene College

This past week was graduation at Philippine Nazarene College. There were six Bachelor of Theology graduates and twelve Bachelor of Science in Religious Education graduates.

A highlight for David was to see five students from the PHILTEEN program (theological education by extension) receive the Christian Leadership Certificate. These students all serve in church planting and pastoral ministry on the Southern Tagalog district. This certificate qualifies them to receive a district license. Pictured below are the students alone with Rev. Caesar Salcedo, PNC professor and director of the PHILTEEN program, along with Pastor Dan Feleo, the mentor of the students.

Curriculum Writing

As chair of the Asia-Pacific RCOSAC, David is heavily involved in writing and editing curriculum for the Nazarene Course of Study for ordination. The Asia-Pacific Region is designing new courses that aim to develop character and be practical in how they are taught. For those involved in the training of ministers, you may find our new approach interesting. You can read about it here: http://equippingforservice.org. David is working on a small book on education with Dr. Bruce Allder of Nazarene Theological College. In this book we will share a new model for education called the "Emmaus Road Journey" and will be sharing it at our Regional Conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in October.

Upcoming Events

Teaching in MyanmarDavid is preparing to teach New Testament Theology in Myanmar this May for the Master of Ministry program of Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary. This is not a new class for him but it has been over a decade since he taught it. So, he will be working hard over the next four weeks to prepare and update notes. His goal is to make the course practical for pastors and leaders in South East Asia.

Updates on Joel

David was able to catch up with Joel in Seoul following the RCOSAC meeting. Joel is enjoying his time at Korea University. Although there are challenges, like finding food, language barriers, and cultural nuances, he is finding his way and making many new friends. Continue to lift him up in prayer.

Updates on Shan

Shan sang her first solo and participated in her first talent show held at APNTS. She sang a Mandy Moore song called "Only Hope" while slides of her childhood were shown. She also gave a testimony of God's healing in her life. She also shared in a seminary class on worship with Rhonda on the theme of ministering to people with disabilities in the context of worship.

Prayer Requests

  • David: Big projects to work on over the next few months, preparation for Myanmar teaching.
  • Rhonda: Continued development of Member Care on our field.
  • Joel: Study Abroad program at Korea University.
  • Shan: Finding new ways to develop and learn.
