The epicentre


I guess many lovers of church buildings will have been saddened by the catastrophic fire at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. To the people of France Notre Dame is much more than a superb example of Gothic architecture; it is, according to President Emmanuel Macron, “the epicentre of our lives.”

In his Gospel, Luke describes Jesus’ last journey up to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. From the Mount of Olives he would have seen the city spread before him with Herod’s temple dominating the skyline. The building spoke of God’s presence among his people and being the focus of their religious and cultural activities was indeed “the epicentre of their lives.”

One of the accusations levelled against Jesus at his trial was his claim to be able “...to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days” (Matt. 26. 61). He was referring, of course, to his own body; broken on the cross on Good Friday and raised to life on Easter Day, opening up a way to God to all who trust in him. As the familiar Easter story unfolds, let us ask ourselves the question: “where is the epicentre of my life?”
