PAPERCOURT OPEN DAY 27TH APRIL - JUST THREE WEEKS AWAY

Our legendary Open Day, when we showcase our amazing club to visitors and potential members, is now just three weeks away, and as we usually have about 300 visitors, we cannot run the day without your help.  We need your help in two ways:

On the day we will need a ‘meet and greet’ team, competent helms to take visitors sailing, plus Sailability, beach masters, safety boat team, and social team and galley team, as well as donations of cakes (bought or homemade) to offer to our visitors.

Please volunteer to help on one of the teams by emailing either jeremyriley.uk@gmail.com or jeremy.sumeray@btinternet.com as soon as possible.

Then we need you to Fly the Flag for Papercourt outside the club

To ensure as many people as possible are aware of the event there are 5 ways you can help promote it:

  1. Invite your friends and family
  2. Put up posters on your local noticeboards
  3. Ask your local school to promote the event
  4. Like us on Facebook and share the posts
  5. Put the Poster on any of your local community/school Facebook Sites

Posters and fliers can be picked up from the club, or hit the button below to download,  and our Facebook site is on the button at the bottom of this page

The Open Day is really important for keeping a strong membership, so please Fly the Flag and help make it a great success.

Improved Jetties

We have updated the layout of our jetties to enable improved launching and recovery.  Both jetties have been lengthened and we have been donated and installed a new committee boat jetty.

Many thanks to David Baple and his team for organising this, including relocating  and cleaning some very heavy anchors!
New Season  - more sailing: more races and more cruising  - without wetsuits

Now we are officially in the Summer Season, the requirement to wear wet or drysuits is lifted until the end of October - but the water is still coooolllldddd so use your common sense until the sunshine arrives!

From 24th April our Cruising Wednesday evenings open up.  Come along, enjoy cruising on the lake until dusk, light up the barbeque, or enjoy a drink at the bar.  Safety cover is provided and it is a perfect opportunity to enjoy our beautiful surroundings and de-stress at the end of the working day.

Update on new race format

The new style Spring and Summer Programme is now under way with the shorter Pursuit races being well received and the AM and PM Pursuit and GH races being run back to back.  In fact this new format appeared so popular that yesterday we had a record number of sailors taking part in the Saturday afternoon General Handicap race – great sailing.  Also all the Novice Race sailors took part in the following two races – well done to our novices for early progression.

New Saturday Start time
As the new program is evolving we have decided to bring the Saturday race start time forward by 30 minutes from the previously published times so, as from next Saturday, the Novice Race will start at 13.00 and the Pursuit and GH races start at 13.45.  This is to shorten the time that those training and being trained on Saturdays have to wait before they can go racing in the afternoon.

We will ensure that the GH races will not start before 14,45 on Saturday and not before 11.45 Sunday AM and 14.30 Sunday PM, so if you just want to enter the GH races here are your times.  Generally the Race Officer will try to start the five minute countdown for the GH race as soon as the last Pursuit racer crosses the line.

All these changes are now included in the latest Spring/Summer Program (Version 4) - Hit the button below -  which also now has the published dates for two more open meetings this year.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PURSUIT START SEQUENCE HAS CHANGED AND YOU NEED TO CHECK YOUR START NUMBER EITHER BY CLICKING THE BUTTON BELOW OR LOOKING AT THE LISTS IN THE CLUBHOUSE

Winter Series
Well done to Andrew Boyce in his Solo, taking the top podium position in the Winter Series ably supported on the winners rostrum by Jon Paton with Sue Michelmore, in their RS200, and Amer Sarssam in third, sailing his Scow.

and don't forget

The Easter Series - Friday 19- Monday 22 April

Mayday Bank Holiday - Team Racing Opportunity

Our Friends from Surrey University are hosting a team racing day on Monday 6th May at Papercourt and this is the information they have sent to us:

The University of Surrey Sailing Club is delighted to announce the return of the Surrey Spoon. Held on the 6th of May 2019 the Surrey Spoon is a one day Team Racing event held in two flights of fireflies. The event is 3 vs 3 boat Team Racing, with each boat to be sailed by 2 persons - It is important to put together a team of 6 and fill in an entry form before the day of the event. Due to the nature of the event it will unfortunately be unlikely to accommodate anyone turning up on the day and hoping to sail.
A BBQ lunch will be available (weather dependent) on the day, registration will be held from 9am with first race start at 10am. Any questions pleas contact ho00079@surrey.ac.uk or ussu.sailing@surrey.ac.uk.
The facebook event can be found here https://www.facebook.com/events/631560170628544/ and entry form here https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fforms%2Fd%2Fe%2F1FAIpQLSepRjRgCYCVMrG1ySnJp8NOv10Cnowx5DFupvZhUHitvXqvpQ%2Fviewform%3Fusp%3Dsf_link%26fbclid%3DIwAR2m2ggvJMlLATizonRsgATiLez8xTSC4PwAQGl44FJlUmmtHYWsdZJIGG8&h=AT30YOPSFfmcHnLagt7JfKgFT4ZXdbrWyf5FE7ylmNX-jDIlMYzWSuFmPuiRLF8QR7roVq541RygvVEqf8BmEy4rj926uTNvjkOUdRogE_2Xw43c6kg_AgvFqvM8mDxXXpc

It would be great if we could put together a team - I am thinking our Junior Trainers would be perfect!  Entries before the day as above.

Surrey Schools Regatta  - Saturday 23rd March

Saturday 23rd March 2019 saw the Surrey Schools Regatta take place at Papercourt.

36 boats took to the water, across a range of different classes, with 3 schools having sufficient competitors to enter the team event:

  • Glebelends, Cranleigh
  • Royal Grammar School, Guildford
  • St. Catherine’s School, Bramley

With good sailing weather, the morning saw 3 races taking place, putting the school teams very close on points.

After an excellent lunch, the sun came out and the final race saw Glebelands pull ahead to win the team trophy for the first time.

The winner of the overall individual trophy was Papercourt sailor Thomas White, sailing an RS Aero.
