Mordecai CAC March 9, 2019 Meeting Minutes

Attendees: 20+ representing Oakdale, Mordecai, East Mordecai, and Pilot Mill. February minutes approved.

Police Report Statistically not a bad 30 days since the 1st of Feb. No significant crime patterns. Please call 911 before you post anything on list serves or community sites. 3 residential home break ins. 1 was a case of a door being left open.

Spring is a renovation time, homes are left open while contractors go in and out and the house is not actually lived in, which makes it ideal for squatters. Again, keep things locked and get the police in the loop before you post anything.

Still waiting for guidance on the city re electric scooters and how to enforce.

Community Engagement Report: Raleigh Neighborhood Exchange Event: a mini-exchange will be held on the 28th from 6-8 pm at Marbles due to the original having to be canceled in the fall. Limited to the first 100 people that sign up online at raleighnc.gov. Theme is communication, keynote speaker is a magician. Anyone can sign up, it’s a way to bring people out in the community and bring forth new ideas. You’re connecting with neighbors and city staff to talk about community issues.

COR Budget:  FY 2020 survey Budget is good for transparency/policy/management and it’s the law. Total budget across all funds for 2019 was 971 million for all funds. General fund, including public safety, parks and rec, infrastructure etc for 2019 was 508 million. For FY 2020 General fund will be between 518 and 520 million. Sales tax and property tax are slowing down as growth slows. Property taxes grew really fast in Raleigh in past years, now the growth is happening outside Raleigh as in Wake Forest. Growth has slowed 2/10s of a percent, but growth is still happening. This year the city is spending a lot of time on Capital Improvement. Current hot topic is leaf collection. Next meeting on Monday will focus on public utilities and possible rate increases. The survey located at budget.raleighnc.gov is your opportunity to make your voice heard and what you think is important for the budget. Public hearing on the FY 2020 budget will be June 4, 2019 at 7 pm at Raleigh City Council Chambers.

All about CSAs (Community Sponsored Agriculture) Keep things local!
  • Chickadee Farms with owner Jenn Sanford Johnson Vegetables, fruit, herbs and chickens. Certified naturally grown by a community organization. Pick-up is at Person St. Bar, lots of Mordecai and Oakwood customers. Runs 24 weeks, 12 weeks in spring and 12 weeks in fall. Offers a full share (every week) or half share (every other week). Current example of a share is kale, spinach, rainbow swiss chard, winter bibb lettuce, red romaine lettuce and cut flowers. Eggs are an add-on. Full share is $720. Half share is $360. Payment plans are available. CSA members are investing in her farm so they are her top priority. For example, CSA members get the best and first of all her produce before she goes to market. In addition to the share members get a newsletter that includes recipes, plus she has a private Facebook page for members. Her farm offers events to CSA members to see where their food is grown, like a fall pig picking. She also has an online store where you can join and purchase a share. There is a private store for CSA members as well. CSA for Chickadee Farms begins April 8th.
  • Infinity Hundred Farm with David McConnell and Katie Breen Have 32 acres around downtown Raleigh. No machinery, no pesticides. Not yet certified organic it will take two more years for that to happen. Currently feeding 30 families. Operate 48 weeks out of the year. Also serve restaurants but CSA members take priority. Crops are planned a year in advance with input from members. 4 CSAs each year, one for each season. Pickups are generally Wednesday afternoons and you can put your share together. If you can’t pick up on Wednesdays, there are walk-in coolers that are available 24/7 for you to pick up your share. They can grown year round because they have hydroponic greenhouses and aquaponic houses through NC State. Spring CSA begins April 10 for 8-10 weeks. Shares are bought by season. $200 for the winter CSA. You can join anytime, even in the middle of a season. The rates will be pro-rated as long as they have enough supply. They also offer a program where they will donate a weekly share if someone is out of town.
  • The Produce Project with Mike Shumake They don’t grow anything. They are the budget side of the CSA model. They will give a ton of food for the money. They are a different service in that they buy produce in bulk from the Farmer’s Market and resell as shares. They are a non-profit 501c. You can order a single share or subscribe for weekly or bi-weekly shares. What is not sold is donated. A single share is $18.00. Pick-up is Wednesdays and Thursdays at Brookside Shopping Center. Sign-up is at produceproject.org.
