At the BLDC we are firm believers that we get to live in the best part of our great state.  We come to work every day with a desire to help make our community a better place and are passionate about leading our local economy.  As part of these efforts, we are incredibly excited to announce that we will be hosting Montana’s first ever Economic Development Week, May 6th through the 10th at locations throughout Butte.  The week will begin with the Butte Young Professionals hosting a spring symposium that will focus on the future of our community and trainings that will provide them with tools to grow. This event will be followed up with training for the bedrock of our economy, our entrepreneurs.

On May 7th and 8th, the schedule includes small business training, a women's business trolley tour, workshops and an opportunity to partake in a panel discussion with our communities economic leaders in a facilitated discussion including the BLDC, our local city-county Government, the Chamber of Commerce and the CVB.  The week will be capped off with Workforce Training, formerly known as "Superhost Training" on May 9th as well as a Workforce Fair on May 10th to help grow our workforce and provide an opportunity for job seekers to get 1 on 1 time with employers.  Recruiters from the FCR Call Center will be conducting on-site pre-interviews and assessments at the Copper King Hotel in an effort to begin filling over 300 jobs in their Butte facility.

Whether you are a small business owner, a recent student, a large employer or someone looking to transition into a new career there will be something for you.  For full details, you can click on the link below, and be sure to register for any training or events that require registration. We look forward to a fun and educational week showcasing the best that Butte has to offer!

The Butte Young Professionals are excited to announce their first annual spring symposium!  The symposium will be at the Northwestern Energy Headquarters in Uptown and will feature a keynote speaker, training on leadership, career growth and opportunities to provide feedback to community leaders in a fishbowl environment.  The event will start with registration at 9:00 a.m. on the 6th and will conclude with a networking reception sponsored by Headframe Spirits at Slainte.

“We have unlimited potential for young people in our community,” says Joe Willauer, BYP President, “With our affordable cost of living, access to the outdoors and unmatched community spirit, Butte provides young professionals with the things they need to build a strong foundation for both their personal and professional lives”.

The event will be a part of Montana’s first ever Economic Development Week, a local celebration of national economic development week.  Along with the Spring Symposium, the BLDC will be hosting events for job seekers, employees, entrepreneurs, and small business owners. A full list of events can be found here:  http://bit.ly/EcoDevoWeek

The BLDC and Headwaters RCD has just finished the first round of Brownfields Program meetings in the Headwaters region.  If you did not have a chance to attend one of the meetings, but would still like to receive more information or an application, please email Joe Willauer at jwillauer@bldc.net.

The funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is designed to conduct Phase I and II Brownfields assessments in the seven-county region. The funds are applicable to sites that have been impacted by petroleum as well as hazardous materials and are designed to support the redevelopment of the property, leading to economic growth.

FCR Call Center is Hiring!

From 2010 to 2017, Butte only grew by about 400 people, or a growth rate of .2%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

“We definitely aren’t headed backward, but we also aren’t skyrocketing like some of our neighboring communities,” said Butte Local Development Corporation Executive Director Joe Willauer.

The Butte Plaza Mall has lost several tenants over the years including Herberger’s, JCPenny, and Payless. Kmart also closed for business, leaving that strip of Harrison Avenue fairly bare.

Now, First Call Resolutions (FCR), an Oregon-based call center, plans to move into the former JCPenny location at the mall. According to Willauer, this is a positive sign for the future of Butte’s economy.

“I don’t know of any other communities that have the can-do attitude and I think that stems from our mining legacy. But as we grow in an incremental fashion, we are able to keep that culture what it is and such a great place to live, while also looking to the future and enticing new companies like FCR to join us.”

Butte-Silver Bow Community Development Director Karen Byrnes believes new jobs at the call center will result in more money being spent in various areas of the community including retail, the food industry, and real estate.

“I always like to say the rising tide lifts all boats,” said Byrnes. “But it will in all areas because we do have an opportunity, because we have housing that is available. It might need to be upgraded or things might need to happen to that, but those owners will be able to provide housing to our community, so I look at it as a very great opportunity.”

This last week, FCR has started the hiring process by regionally recruiting employees throughout the northwest region of the county.
