Ottawa Mindfulness Clinic

Spring 2019

Welcome SPRING!

We think Spring is actually here! Ottawa broke so many records for Winter that we certainly deserve some sunshine and green grass!

Spring cleaning at the OMC included reorganizing our website tabs so you can find programs and retreats more easily!

A warm welcome to all our new graduates of the MBSM and M4OSI programs! It was our privilege to share this practice with all of you. The all-day mini-retreat in March was a wonderful gathering of alumni and current participants!

A message to all first responders, military, veterans OSI participants:
-We would like to have a newsletter specifically for you that is informative of current PTSD news and other programs, especially those that offer ongoing practice opportunities. Please contact us if you wish to be on the newsletter.

Thank you, Everyone, for your support and continuing participation in the OMC programs.

Books We Recommend

It's been a busy publication season for mindfulness topics! Here are a few books and magazine we recommend.

A great activity magazine filled with drawings and projects for your child. We were thrilled to have been part of the community of mindful monkeys who supported this amazing venture! The founders and team have a long history of developing down-to-earth approaches to mindfulness. The magazine is proof that when we live our practice, it does produce something that is loving, clear, and beneficial to many, many others.

From the website:

The first issue of Mindful Monkey Magazine explores Presence. Families will learn how presence relates to mindfulness and how it helps them connect with themselves, as well as with others. Included in the issue is a children’s story called “Moxie’s Monkey Mind”, where young Moxie learns a simple mindfulness practice for parents and their children to try.

We can't think of a better way to bring mindfulness into our lives!

A terrific workbook that folds in values and acceptance to help with shyness.

Teens are going through so many struggles in our world today. Emotional upheavals, while a normal process of growing up, are intensified by being highly self-critical and driven. Bullying and isolation from peers contributes and capitalizes on these inner feelings. Self-compassion practices can help for them as it does for adults.

We tend to be really hard on ourselves because we've been taught and have learned that it's the only way to be competitive and successful. However, if we don't realize there are boundaries between being determined and destructive, we can drive ourselves beyond human limits. This leads to feelings of failure and believing we are not competent.

Learn how to calibrate your efforts so there's a balance between determination to meet your personal goals and driving yourself over the edge of your tolerance.

Dr. Monteiro is a Registered Psychologist and Certified Teacher of Mindful Self-Compassion and has published in mindfulness, values, ethics, and self-compassion.
