THE NAVIGATOR

Happy Spring at OLG!

Lent is almost over, and Easter is coming up. This newsletter is being published to let you know what's going on and what's coming up at our school. Just as a reminder, you can go to our website for blue folder notes, the calendar, our Facebook link, teacher pages, etc.  http://olgmariners.org
It's Gala Time, April 13th!
There are only a few days until the Annual Gala, and there are still a few tickets left ($75/person). Come by the office for tickets, and come join the fun! (Proceeds go toward a well-deserved bonus for our dedicated teachers.)
This year's theme is Space. Our Science Clubs have been studying space-related science and our Yearbook is full of stars!

2018-2019 Yearbook Orders Due

Time is running out to order your OLG Yearbook and preserve all those wonderful memories. The cost is $20 for a standard yearbook or $26 for a yearbook with a personalized cover. You can get an order form in the office, or order online at  https://ybpay.lifetouch.com/ with Yearbook ID code 13178719. There's no time left to put it off until later. Every order is put into a weekly drawing for a free dress pass.

Elizabeth Ann Seton Award

The Elizabeth Ann Seton Award was given to Ida Curnutte this year for her service and support to our school and students. We appreciate all her work helping in the library, at the book fairs, at the Christmas Store and many other activities.

Volunteer Banquet
Volunteers enhance our school, and to celebrate them and to recognize their important contributions, the annual Volunteer Banquet  is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22nd at 6pm.

You Spoke, We Listened

The 2Q Parent Survey asked what you valued most about our school and what you would like to see improved. Responses indicate that parents value our emphasis on religion, academics, small class sizes, and dedicated teachers.

There were several suggestions for improvements which we are considering, including covered walkways, extracurricular activities, playground equipment, communications, and parental involvement.

Please be aware that the afternoon attendance count actually decreases absences and makes room for doctor's appointments, etc.,which might otherwise have to be counted as a full day absence. Also if picking up Pre-K earlier than other students is an issue, parents can choose to have Pre-K students brought to the main building and dismissed with the rest of the school.

Life on Board

Academic Testing

This year for the first time, we participated in two new programs and our students excelled in both!

Four 7th grade students participated in the Duke University Talent Identification Program and took the ACT test in February. All four scored high enough to be recognized in San Antonio on May 9th. Four 8th grade students took the PSAT at St. Philips in El Campo in April, and all four excelled.

Mariners Track Team

The Mariners Track Team wrapped up their last track meet and a successful season. Soccer has started and is the last athletics event of this year..

Social Studies

Mr. Reardon from St. Joseph in Yoakum gave an informative and moving presentation on the Holocaust to middle school students to help them understand what can happen if people don't stand up for justice.

The 7th grade class took a field trip to see the Camel Corps on April 3rd, commemorating camels being brought here in 1856.

7th grade is also going to Austin April 26th to visit the Capitol. Many thanks to Russell Cain for sponsoring this trip.

6th Grade is having a European Feast on April 11th to experience food from other countries.

Home & School Association Voyages

The HSA meeting is having their annual Hamburger Sale May 2nd.

School Advisory Council Log -- Tuition Assistance Policy

A new Tuition Assistance Policy was developed to better serve the needs of our Mariner families. Contact the office to see if you qualify. Our goal is to provide a faith-based education to every child whose family so desires.

Lenten Conversion & Easter Resurrection

As we walk the last days of Lent and prepare for the joy of Easter, we are mindful of and grateful for your continued generosity. For your convenience, we provide the opportunity for online donations, so please consider  a one-time or recurring gift to benefit our mission. May everyone experience the joy of the Resurrection.

Donate online by visiting olgmariners.org/online-giving.
It’s quick, easy, and secure!
We want to take this opportunity to thank our donors. Your generosity makes it possible for our school to provide a loving and productive environment in which students can grow in the Light of Christ.
