Southside Partnership DLR - New Monthly E-zine

Southside Partnership DLR have recently launched their own new organisational e-zine. Their newsletter will regularly provide updates on work that both the Partnership and their colleagues in hosted project are undertaking. You will also find information on key events and selected SSP training which will be taking place.

The SCTN newsletter will also continue to provide more detailed information about training organised by Southside Community Training Network, Southside Partnership DLR and other community and educational institutions in the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown area. This second newsletter has a specific focus on education, training and capacity-building in DLR. 


 
SCTN Courses this Spring
Motivational interviewing - June 6th & 20th 2019

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an approach, drawing from client-centred theory, cognitive theory, systems theory, social psychology and persuasion. As an approach it was developed to enable individuals to reach a decision to change and to commit to this change.

SafeTALK & ASIST Training

Southside Community Training Network will be organising further suicide alertness & prevention training over the next coming weeks:

The next SafeTALK suicide alertness session will be taking place on May 27th 2019 from 9am-1pm at Shanganagh Park House. 

We will also be running another 2-day ASIST training (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills training on June 10th and 11th 2019 at Mounttown Community Facility. 

These trainings are run in collaboration with the HSE. If you are interested in any of these courses please contact Lisa Sieger-Jamison by phone 087 737 0372 or email lisa.sieger@sspship.ie. 

Understanding Self-Harm Training

Southside Community Training Network in collaboration with the HSE will be running a 1-day training course on ‘Understanding Self-Harm’ on June 17th 2017 from 9am-4.30 at Shanganagh Park House, Rathsallagh Ave, Shankill, Co. Dublin. 
 
The aim of the programme is to:
 
  • Develop participants’ knowledge and understanding of self-harm and the reasons underlying self-harm behaviour
  • Consider the needs of people who self-harm
 
The training is suitable for people who work with young people such as youth workers, teachers, residential care staff, Gardaí, and people in caring professions and parents, concerned members of the public, people who work in alcohol and addiction services, those who work with homeless people and people who work with those recovering from mental illness.

Other Southside Partnership Courses and Events
Next Youth at Risk Meeting - Peer Relationships

The next Youth at Risk Network Meeting will be taking place on May 23rd 2019 at the Scouts Den in Coolevin, Loughlinstown from 9.15am until 1pm followed by a light lunch. 

We will be looking at the theme of peer relationships and how we can best support young people at risk in terms of:

 
  • Maintaining and strengthening a relationship with young people
  • Supporting young people’s peer interpersonal skills
  • Being able to remain confident in our own abilities and skillset as practitioners
 
In order to assist the workshop process in terms of resource we have invited BeLonG To (visit their website here) and 3ts - turn the tide of suicide (visit their website here). 

The event will be facilitated by Community Action Network (CAN).

This event has been organised by Southside Partnership DLR at Holly House in conjunction with the DLR Drug and Alcohol Task Force (DATF).

dlr Age Well Expo 2019

The dlr Age Well Expo will take place at the Pavilion in Leopardstown Racecourse on Sunday June 9th 2019 to celebrate and showcase services and products available to older people. Keynote speakers include: Christy Kenneally and Rosemary Smith. The dlr Age Well Expo will also provide an opportunity to connect, engage and hear about topics of interest, particularly around the subjects of participation, health and security. The Healthy Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Plan 2019-2022 was launched on 9th May in Marlay House, Marlay Park.

This plan aims to support Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown in becoming a Healthier County, by promoting and supporting positive health and wellbeing for all the population of the county across the whole lifespan. The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Local Community and Development Committee (LCDC), in conjunction with the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Children and Young People Services Committee (CYPSC) and through collaborating with stakeholders, developed the Plan under Healthy Ireland funding. The development of the Plan was led by the Healthy Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Steering Committee, with representation from key partners and stakeholders, including Southside Partnership DLR.   

The Vision set out in the Plan is as follows: 

Where the community of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown are supported to access opportunities to achieve good physical health and positive mental health and wellbeing.

The plan identifies eight priorities for a Healthy Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown:                                               
  • Healthy County                                                      
  • Physical Health and Activity
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Children and Young People
  • Families
  • Disability
  • Age Friendly
  • Diversity

Dún Laoghaire-Rathown County Council are seeking the voice of older people in the area to find out what factors are currently affecting them and what can be done to bring about positive change for older people in the Community. At the seminar information will also be provided in relation to supports and services available to older people within the County via the council and various other organisations operating throughout the County. The seminar aims to encourage people to join or indeed create groups to support Older People in the area, and combat issues such as loneliness and isolation. 

The afternoon sessions will include presentations from dlr County Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Network for Older People, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Public Participation Network (PPN) followed by a workshop focusing on Issues affecting Older People throughout dlr.

Living Well with Dementia Event - May 27th 2019

HSE CHO 6 Dublin South Living Well with Dementia (LWwD) will be holding an event on May 27th in the Lexicon, Dún Laoghaire, which may be of interest to you (please click here for the flyer).

This event will see the opening of a special Art Exhibition titled “Can you see what I see” by Caroline Hyland (please click here for the flyer).

Barbara Ann Harkin (Azure programme) will also be on hand to provide information on the Gallery Art tours in the Lexicon.

There will also be an opportunity to try “THE MAGIC TABLE” which is an interactive enjoyable experience using light simulations through a projector.

Some members of staff from Carew House, St Vincent’s Hospital and Primary Care will be available and will include some ideas around activities for people living with dementia.

Age & Opportunity Bealtaine Festival
 
Bealtaine is Ireland’s national festival which uniquely celebrates the arts and creativity as we age. The festival is run by Age & Opportunity, the national organisation that promotes active and engaged living as we get older.

Spring into Heritage - Enjoy our Heritage

The Spring into Heritage Programme running from April to May 2019 is a series of free guided tours run by the Heritage Office of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. DLR PPN releases New "Plain English" Information Booklet.



DLR PPN are pleased to announce after working together with the National Adult Literacy Association (NALA) over a number of months it has produced a booklet which carries the NALA’s ‘Plain English’ mark. This shows that the booklet uses language that is easy to understand and free from jargon. Please click here for the e-version of the booklet.
