Stories of HOPE

Shanna has had a very rough time recently. In December, she lost the love of her life and father of her three children, Michael, in a tragic accident. Shortly after, Shanna lost her job, and the school she was attending to become a medical assistant closed down. On top of all of this tragedy, she discovered she was pregnant with the couple's fourth child, but suffered a miscarriage.

With help from family, she is now in a home with her children, including sweet Sophia pictured above, and HOPE has been able to ease her burden with a sofa, tables, and lamps. HOPE has also provided a pizza pan and pizza cutter at Shanna's request, so that she can carry on a family tradition started by Michael of Friday night pizza nights. May God give strength to this family as they rebuild their lives.

Yard Sales
During our Anniversary year, we're looking back at
15 Years of HOPE For All
Yard Sale set up at St. Philip Neri in 2009

Expenses were manageable in the early years of HOPE For All. Community donations allowed HOPE to purchase a used van, and supporter Ted Shaw donated a trailer. Insurance and gas, along with some items for clients, made up the bulk of the non-profit's expenses.

HOPE encountered a setback when EJ Enterprises closed. All of the inventory that had been stored there--free of charge--had to be relocated. People's homes, storage units, even the back room of a local barber shop became the repository for furniture, clothing, and household items for HOPE's clients. For several months, volunteers had to coordinate HOPE's operation out of multiple locations, while serving about 100 families a year.

When a promising opportunity arose for space at the Azar complex, founder Leo Zerhusen was faced with a dilemma. How could HOPE earn money to pay the rent?

HOPE had dabbled in participating in yard sales. Now the extra donations received--beyond the necessities that clients requested--would be the answer.

"We inserted fliers in people's doors asking for donations," Leo said. "It basically took off by word of mouth."

Hosting yard sales, first held in the St. Philip Neri gym and later at St. John's Lutheran Church, was a 3-day process, between packing the truck, setting up the event, and then taking everything down and storing again.

"People lined up and Leo would check them out and tell them how much," remembered Michelle Moore, longtime HOPE volunteer. "People often gave extra money. It was a big undertaking," she said.

But the hard work paid off. Between occasional contributions from friends and supporters, income from the yard sales, as well as other small fundraisers--collecting soda can tabs for gas money, for example--HOPE was able to run on a shoestring budget, yet help thousands of people in it's first 10 years.

What started as a simple idea to raise money with excess goods--toys, purses, tools, decorative items, wall art, jewelry, books, etc.-- has blossomed into a dedicated monthly indoor yard sale for the past eight years. Three years ago, HOPE For all moved into its current space and was able to use 2000 square feet to house the permanent yard sale for the many "treasure hunters" who support HOPE throughout the year.

The proceeds help the non-profit pay rent, insurance, and utilities as community donations continue to bless HOPE with this income stream.

"We've come a long way!" enthused Michelle.

"I would like to thank you all so much for helping me and my children with furniture for our home and also praying for us. The team of young men were so great who delivered our furniture and the two women who came to do the intake were so nice to us. Thank you all again and God bless."
