Ohio Artists Debut New LED-Lit Sculpture on The Castle in the
Short North Arts District

Suspended sculpture transforms new building into a canvas for Public Art

Columbus, OH -- Beginning Monday, April 8, Short North Arts District patrons will have a new public art work to explore. Established Columbus artists Stephen Canneto and Judith Spater have created a dynamic new sculpture that is suspended nearly 30 feet up in the air at the northwest corner of Second Avenue and High Street. Spanning nearly 25 feet in length, the three part sculpture, titled Jubilation, delivers a dance of light and color that changes by the minute. Evoking the vibrancy and diversity of the Short North Arts District community, the sculpture is a celebration of the joy found within our community. Comprised of stainless steel, dichrolaminate, acrylic, and hundreds of Bluetooth controlled LED lights, the sculpture is the latest in a number of newly installed and planned permanent public artworks in the Short North Arts District.

Canneto, perhaps best known locally for his iconic works at Franklin Park Conservatory and Downtown Columbus, has been creating public artworks for over 40 years. Inspired by nature, the built environment and a fascination with technology and new materials, Canneto’s public artworks often draw upon his early life, military service and project management for the U.S. Steel Corporation. Canneto, along with his partner and artistic collaborator, Spader, have created artworks throughout Ohio for both public and private spaces. Spader’s background in Landscape Architecture and painting elegantly complements Canneto’s steel shapes, often transforming materials in new ways.

“The Short North has deservedly gained a reputation as the most vibrant area in Columbus,” said project artist Judith Spader, “Our vision for Jubilation was quite simply the celebration of the Short North as a vital and exuberant community of innovative visionaries.”

Jubilation is a project of the Short North Alliance and was made possible with support from the Borror Family Foundation and Ingram White Castle Foundation, with promotional and educational support provided by the Greater Columbus Arts Council.

To assist with Jubilation’s creation, Canneto and Spader engaged Jezerinac/Geers, engineers; Blackburn’s Fabrication, Lori Hochradel, AutoCAD, Laser Cutting Shapes, and Light It Up Columbus.

“With all of the recent growth and development in the Short North Arts District, investments in public art are made ever more important,” said Betsy Pandora, Executive Director of the Short North Alliance. “Both the Borror and Ingram families have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to supporting local artists and enlivening the Short North Arts District through public art – leaving a lasting impact on our community.”

“Stephen Canneto is one of the most renowned artists in Columbus,” said Doug Borror, CEO of Borror. “White Castle and Borror are very proud to display this sculpture on our building that will enhance the Short North experience.”

“We’re proud to celebrate the arts with our friends and neighbors in the Short North in ways that feed our souls, and the souls of craver generations everywhere,” said Lisa Ingram, President & CEO of White Castle. “Jubilation does exactly that!”

“It’s exciting to see Columbus’ permanent public art collection grow, especially in a neighborhood with a long history of supporting and promoting the arts,” said Tom Katzenmeyer, President and CEO of the Greater Columbus Arts Council. “The Greater Columbus Arts Council supports efforts like these because we know the positive impact public art has on our sense of place, our quality of life and the city’s ability to attract residents and visitors.”
