STUDENT SCIENCE RECOGNITION
Long Trail School celebrates junior Langston Quail, and seniors Zachary Lee and Hope Soucy for being awarded gold medals as top students at this year’s Vermont Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (VSTEM) Fair at Norwich University on Saturday, March 30.  These three students presented their research on the influence of stream velocity and habitat (upstream and downstream side of river rocks) on macroinvertebrate taxa from the Mettowee River. They were also recognized as state finalists for the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and were presented with the prestigious Air Force Science Fair Award.

FACULTY HISTORY RECOGNITION
Tess Kahn has been named as the Vermont senior division nominee for the Hannah E. (Liz) MacGregor Teacher of the Year History Teacher Award. Each of the 57 National History Day affiliates may nominate one middle and high school teacher each for this award. Two $5,000 awards are presented to teachers who demonstrate a commitment to engaging students in historical learning through innovative use of primary sources, implementation of active learning strategies to foster historical thinking skills, and participation in the National History Day Contest. In honor of his sister, Dr. James F. Harris sponsors the awards in recognition of the pivotal role teachers play in the lives of students. The two national winners will be announced on #NationalHistoryDay on June 13.

SPECIAL MORNING MEETING PRESENTATION
On Monday, Ethan Edson, a marine scientist affiliated with Northeastern University in Boston, presented his research on micro-plastics in our oceans. Ethan has a patent pending on a micro-plastics sensor, the Mantaray, which has been garnering a lot of attention in the marine science world. He presented an informative and rather startling look at how plastics have infiltrated our water supply and offered some practical tips on keeping the problem from growing:
  • Eliminate all single use plastics from your daily life;
  • Carry a Nalgene bottle for water and a Yeti for other beverages;
  • Don't buy bottled water, plastic straws, or disposable tableware;
  • Avoid all styrofoam products;
  • Clean up rivers, streams, beaches any time you are near a water source: just picking up what you see on the ground will help tremendously;
  • Talk to your state representatives to ban plastic bags in your area;
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
Ethan is the son of Arts Chair Anharad Llewelyn. For more information about Edson and his Mantaray project, please visit https://ethan-edson.squarespace.com/.
