WIIT Hosts Japanese Minister for April 2nd Roundtable Discussion
WIIT was honored to host Takeshi Komoto, Minister, Economy Trade, Industry/Business & Energy from the Japanese Embassy, with the kind hosting of Squire Patton Boggs, for an insightful and extensive roundtable discussion. Komoto-san provided an historical overview of Japan’s leadership role in promoting free trade in the region, and especially as part of the multilateral, rules-based system embodied in the World Trade Organization (WTO). The Minister highlighted the importance of engagement with the US, both for bilateral negotiations and in the trilateral discussions with the EU to put forward credible reform agenda for the WTO.
Additionally, Japan is leading efforts to promote global cooperation on digital trade, at the WTO and within their chairmanship of the G20 for 2019. Komoto-san highlighted next steps on the US and Japan talks, starting with staged talks to promote greater industrial goods trade and ultimately leading to a comprehensive deal. Audience participants noted their strong support for greater US and Japan cooperation, including preventing further tariff disputes and ensuring a high standard, comprehensive trade agreement.
WIIT Partners with GW ESIA on Career Development
WIIT welcomed the opportunity to engage our President (Lisa Schroeter); two board members (Katherine Bedard and Yuri Unno) and WIIT Trust Chair (Kathi Lunardi) in a wide-ranging discussion with GW graduate and undergraduate students in international affairs and business.
The discussion focused on the role that WIIT can play in career development, especially in creating and early and supportive network of mentors and champions. All four panelists highlighted the importance of leveraging a network to get first-hand input on the wide range of careers available in international trade – from associations to development to industry advocacy to corporate careers.
The students engaged in an insightful debate covering education, career, and the personal aspects of being a woman in a demanding global environment.
WIIT was delighted to partner with GW to expand awareness and engagement in our organization at al career levels, especially students.
