“I am the Way” was Invitational

It was great to see Jesus’ claim, “I am the Way” termed as “invitational” on Sunday. That’s a perspective we don’t hear enough about.

Jesus wasn’t saying He was the Way simply to brag or even state a fact. He said He was the Way because He wanted Thomas and everyone else to jump on His bandwagon and reconnect to God. Jesus said He was the Way in many, many different ways during His brief time on Earth. He said He was everything from the Light of the world to the Living Water to the Bread of Life to the Good Shepherd to indicate that He was what man was ultimately looking for.

In fact, if we look at all of His interactions with people, we’ll see that Jesus was constantly inviting people to follow Him.He has not altered His bold statements about Himself nor His desire to have you follow Him. He looks at us all today and says, “I am the Way.” He is still inviting us to come to God through Him and to leave our darkness, our lost-ness behind.

As was stated on Sunday, “Jesus is saying there’s a different way to live your life.” He is inviting us to put our faith in Him and be born again, to find God in a personal way, to experience the freedom of having our burdens lifted and our hearts changed.

Jesus saying, “I am the Way” also forces all humans to take a stand on Who He was. With that bold statement, He leaves only three choices. Either:

  1. He was not the Way and He knew He was not the Way, which makes Him a liar
  2. He was not the Way but didn’t know He was not the Way, which makes him crazy
  3. He was the Way

Which of the above options do you choose? Can you use these three options to share about Jesus with others? After all, “I am the Way” was definitely invitational.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for inviting me to follow You and gain abundant, eternal life. Use me to invite others to follow You now.
