Upcoming Food Skills Workshop: Building a Pantry

Sunday, April 14th, 2019 | 1:00 pm
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Farmer's Market

Mark your calendars! Join Executive Director and local chef, Ian Lai, on the basics of building a pantry. Building a well-stocked pantry will help you easily prepare healthy and tasty meals, without having to run to the grocery store. Buying in bulk saves you money and time. Having dried and canned goods in your pantry will help you align with the new Canada's Food Guide, of cooking more, and eating more plant-based proteins, which usually can come off your shelf.

Join us at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Farmer's Market for an afternoon of learning, while supporting local artisans and enjoying one of Richmond's historical landmarks.

Announcing our Kids in the Garden Summer Employment Program!

Richmond Food Security Society is very excited to announce our Kids in the Garden Summer Employment Program. We will be hiring, training, and mentoring students at all of our participating schools' gardens to continue garden learning throughout the growing season. This way, students gain skills and the garden can continue to be a flourishing green space through the summer.

Students aged 12-19 will be able to apply on website. Students will be paid minimum wage, have access to fresh food grown in the garden all 8 weeks of the program, receive a garden starter kit, mentorship, training, and learn their first job skills.

More information can be found on our website, or email Paige at programs@richmondfoodsecurity.org.

Community Gardens Update:

Volunteering in your community garden

Another growing season is about to kick off and we need all hands on deck. Each garden relies on gardener volunteer time to keep it in shape. There are many positions available at each garden and we are looking for volunteers.

Positions include:
  • Garden Reviewer (training provided)
  • Shed monitor
  • Weed eater (training and safety instructions included)
If you are interested in any of the positions, please fill out the form here.

Garden Clean-up

Please join your fellow gardeners in cleaning up the gardens. This will be a gardener-led session, so just look around and find what needs to be done. Initially it was set for April 21st, but as that is Easter Sunday, we have rescheduled to April 20th from 12pm to 4pm.

Tasks needed will include:
  • Tidying up the shed

  • Cleaning and fixing tools

    • If they can’t be fixed on the day, make a plan to fix them or email Sarina to let her know what needs to be done

  • Weeding common areas

  • Mowing common areas

  • Gardeners who need help weeding around their plot

  • General tidying up of the gardens
