What is the great value red wine of France? For us the answer is "Cru Beaujolais." The wine we see coming from the region is of high quality and yet prices are affordable. From the grape Gamay, people usually think of Beaujolais as fruit-driven and to be drunk early. While that is true of many Beaujolais-Villages, the region also produces lighter, refined red wines capable of aging, especially from the ten delineated Cru. These feature unique characteristics. Here are gorgeous examples from three of our favourite "Cru Beaujolais" to help you discover the region.

Dominique Piron Morgon Cote du Py 2017

Beaujolais, FRANCE

Normally $42
Special Price $39

"Morgon" is one of the most structured, complex and "serious" of all Cru Beaujolais. It has many great producers, of which Dominique Piron is one. The Cote du Py is a little sub area of world fame. Vines on this vineyard are planted to high density, resulting in intensely flavoured grapes and a more tannic expression of Gamay.

"Piron wines display extraordinary depth, freshness and verve, with real terroir-specificity. Morgon wines tend to be racy and elegant, and always have a slight hint of black cherry, bright spicy notes and great structure, which lends them great ageing potential.” - Cellarhand

Domaine Blain Cote de Brouilly 2016
Beaujolais, FRANCE

Normally $55
Special Price $50

Brouilly yields a "Classic" expression of Beaujolais - relatively soft and fruit-driven - however, the Cote de Brouilly, from where this wine comes, is an ancient volcanic hill producing voluptuous wine, but more structured with hallmark minerality. This Pierre Bleue comes from vines planted in the 1950s on blue-green granite, giving the wine its name and is made by the children of the famous Blain family of Burgundy.

"Northwest-facing vines bring tension to the wine while the meager soil provides a mineral backbone. The wine shows aromas and flavors of ripe red fruits such as strawberries and cherries, while a percentage of whole clusters add to the wine’s complexity.” - Domaine Blain

Domaine Metrat Fleurie 2016
Beaujolais, FRANCE

Normally $35
Special Price $32

As the name suggests, the cru of Fleurie yields a floral elegance. Domaine Metrat is in La Roilette, considered the best site in Fleurie with some of the oldest vines in the region (80 years). This gives extra depth and structure to the perfumed style.

"15% of this cuvee is vinified in barrel (none new) giving extra dimension to its freshness and perfume, will also age for 10+ years. This is Gamay at it’s finest and beautifully perfumed best." - Metrat

Dominique Piron Rose 2015
Beaujolais, FRANCE

Normally $25
Special Price $23

It may surprise you to hear that production of Beaujolais Rose has doubled in recent years. The Gamay grape lends itself so beautifully to Rose adding an etra dimension for Rose fans. This is a fruity but dry Rose, modern and thoroughly delicious.

"Very crunchy, pure and fresh. Hints of candy, but dry overall. Quite chewy and supple at the same time, with nice density and a dry finish." - Cellarhand
