A tale I wrote
She woke up in total darkness;
a silence so deafening she could hear ghosts.
Am I dead?
She was too scared to ask out loud
in case her nightmare of an intruder
lurking in the space between fear and logic
had come to life and replied.
She tried counting sheep, but they didn’t exist.
In their place lived cotton wool insecurities
with legs as powerful as trees,
each one screaming
as they kicked down her fence.
