You may or may not know that there was some small bike race on Sunday around somewhere called Flanders.  Well, as is always the case the day after these Professional races, social media was plastered with the impressive watts and speeds that these athletes attained with the aid of nothing more than an Ibuprofen and an asthma pump. 

 

But a lot more goes into being a great bike racer than just the delivery of power.  Along with sporting ridiculously tanned oiled silky-smooth legs to rival any competitive (lightweight) Bodybuilder, these guys can handle their bikes better than most, are mentally stronger and more tactically astute.  In fact, fitness often comes a distance second to positioning for example, going into a corner, into a cobbled section or just before a bunch sprint opens up at the finish.

 

So, the next time you are allocating your available hours to a training week or month, ask yourself, is fitness really your main weakness?

Novice Racers’ Coaching Days

(The Surrey Cycle Racing League and The South East Road Racing League require that all 4th Cats (Novices) attend two coaching sessions prior to entering)  

Corner what corner?!!
 
From the first week in May, The Surrey Cycle Racing League put on a wonderful evening series for 4th Category riders every Friday at Dunsfold Aerodrome (The Top Gear test track!) in Cranleigh near Guildford. Being a flat course, and with none of those pesky 3rd Cats to lift the pace, this is the perfect introduction to racing.
