Sunday Service | April 14, 2019

This Sunday, we kick off Holy Week with a triumphant reflection on palms and passion, facilitated by Micah and some passionate music.

We'll look back at the glittery political performance art that was Jesus' Passover entrance into Jerusalem and connect it to the political performance art that is every simple and complex action we each take every day of our lives.

To add to the passion, we'll have some starry numbers by David Bowie, Sia, and Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, belted by some Judson performance art favorites!

EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT! JUDSON COMPLETES PLEDGE MATCH DRIVE TO $5500 IN ONE WEEK !

(Dateline New York, NY)

The Revered Roy (Golden Voice) Atwood announced Sunday evening April 7, 2019 that the pledge drive begun March 31, 2019 to raise $5500 in order to qualify for 1:1 match funds has been completed. Ten new pledges from supporters of Judson’s Operating Budget have generously come forward to give their dollars, knowing that each dollar they give means two dollars for Judson Memorial Church.  Consequently a total of $11,000 has now been raised towards narrowing the 2019 budget gap of approximately $30,000.

The Stewardship Committee thanks wholeheartedly both the Pledgers and Matchers for their generosity.

And, the Committee humbly reminds the Judson community that we are still some $20,000 short and that any and all ideas and dollars aimed at eliminating the prospective deficit are warmly welcomed.

New York City: A Tale of Two Cities – Billionaire’s Row and Habitat’s Habitat by Siggy Raible

Westview News

Last week I spent some time visiting with a good friend; she’s 96 years strong, lives alone in her rent-stabilized apartment in Grammercy Park and loves having company. We got to talking about life in New York City; more specifically Manhattan. (When I was growing up in Brooklyn, Manhattan was The City.) Truth be told, I’m a young senior and also live in a rent-stabilized apartment; I live in the formerly bohemian enclave called Greenwich Village. I say “formerly” because, like everywhere else in the city, two penthouses on Leroy Street were listed and I presume sold for the asking price of $51 million and $31 million. Certainly not for the starving artist class!

The Wild Pear Tree (Ahlat Agaci)

Turkish auteur Nuri Bilge Ceylan has never seemed interested in keeping his films up to speed with a fast-paced world. He invites deep introspection from his audience, and seems content to let those with shorter attention spans look elsewhere for more immediately gratifying entertainment. His latest creation, quite characteristically, takes over three hours to tell a story that appears relatively simple on its surface, and this apparent and drawn-out simplicity might easily turn off more easily-distracted viewers.

Many of the artists will be present at the receptions.

William Corwin's Lenten Altar

Through Sunday, April 21th Meeting Room (see below for viewing hours)

The Judson space has never been a static one, and Corwin’s pieces reference processional objects and liturgical tools and furniture that would have been handled and physically venerated: practical sculpture for practical magic. They draw on a fluidity of ideas and history as well, finding inspiration in symbols and representations of deities and natural forces from ancient Sumerian, Egyptian and Babylonian sculpture, as well as contemporary Judeo-Christian, Islamic and Hindu imagery as well. Many of his archaic examples are found specifically in the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, a museum also founded by my family. It will be exciting to see Corwin’s art activated by the ideas and enthusiasm of the Judson congregation that uses the space for a variety of wonderful purposes.  His objects will absorb the passion of the Lenten services, Ash Wednesday, and Easter, of course, as well as the vital social programs of the church.

This month's book: Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Michiko Kakutani, New York Times • Newsday • Esquire • NPR • Booklist

Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother’s unconventional, unconditional love.

Dear you, the writer in you, with the project you have started but can't finish, or the project you would like to start, or with the burning desire to just sit and write,

We will hold the space for a couple of hours, as we sit together, to write.

It is not a workshop. It is communal space, a quiet space

To get the words on the page. That's all.

I look forward to seeing you,

—Dora

Freedom’s Feast 2019: Multifaith Seder for Justice

Saturday, April 20th | Meeting Room
6:30PM

Join
Lab/Shul for Freedom’s Feast: an ecumenical Passover Seder led by Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Zen faith leaders, along with artists, elected officials, activists, and musicians, inspired by our ancient narratives and shared commitment to justice, liberation, and human dignity.

In celebration of Passover and Easter, and with Earth Day just ahead, we’ll gather around a communal table to share a festive feast (kosher for Passover options available), sitting together so that we may rise up, together. In the spirit of our traditions, we dedicate this year to opening our doors and hearts to refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers worldwide.

Freedom’s Feast features highlights from the rituals of Seder – interactive storytelling, live music and prayer – together with contemplation, conversation, and calls to action for unity in New York City and around the world.
