Many of you already use Desmos as a graphing tool, and some of you have discovered the ever-growing library of Desmos Classroom activities at teacher.desmos.com. This month we wanted to highlight some new features of Desmos:
  • Desmos has added more statistics functionality to represent and analyze univariate data. Learn more using this scavenger hunt: bit.ly/desmos-stats-hunt
  • Desmos has built-in features that provide access for students who are blind or visually impaired. Learn more, and please share with your colleagues! learn.desmos.com/accessibility
  • Over time, Desmos is building a geometry environment that allows students to construct geometric objects and investigate their features dynamically: www.desmos.com/geometry You can build your skills with this scavenger hunt: bit.ly/desmos-geo-hunt
  • You can now build your own collection of favorite activities in teacher.desmos.com.
  • While running a Desmos activity with your students, you can take photos of student work (on paper) and quickly add the photos to your teacher dashboard to share with your class.
Please share your favorite technology activities and resources on Google Classroom so that we can learn from each other!

Opportunities for Students and Educators

Opportunities for Students

Summer School Geometry

Bridge to Excellence Scholars Program
Mayor London Breed announced the Bridge to Excellence Program, which will provide scholarships to highly-motivated graduating high school seniors from low-income and under-resourced communities in order to help overcome financial barriers they face to attend college. The program will award up to two students from each of San Francisco’s public high schools with $2,500 each in scholarship awards. SFUSD high school seniors who can demonstrate a financial need and are the first in their family to attend a four-year college are encouraged to apply. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20. The online application can be found at: sfmayor.org/priorities/education. The application window will be open until Monday, April 29, 2019. The Mayor’s Office will review all qualified candidates and notify recipients by the end of May.

Opportunities for Teachers

California Math Council (CMC) North Conference Submissions
There is so much amazing teaching, learning, and collaborating happening in our SFUSD math community––let's share some of that while also learning from others! Submissions to speak at the 2019 CMC-North Conference are being accepted through May 1st. Speakers at the conference receive partial reimbursement for travel and lodging. The theme for this year's conference, which will be held at the Asilomar Conference Grounds from December 6–8, 2019, is "Embracing Cultural Diversity in Mathematics." See the California Math Council website and the Speaker Letter for more information about the conference and how to submit a proposal, or reach out to Elizabeth or Angela!

SF Math Teachers Circle
The San Francisco Math Teachers' Circle is a professional community of teachers and mathematicians who love solving fun, challenging math problems. Teachers of any grade level are welcome! There is a session on April 27 from 9:30 to noon at the Proof School, 973 Mission Street. Sessions are free, and lunch is provided. For more information and to sign up to attend, contact Paul Zeitz: zeitzp@usfca.edu

California Commission on Teacher Credentialing TPA Assessment
Join the CTC in the work of scoring the Commission’s Model Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA). There is an urgent need for single subject assessors in Art, Music, PE, Math, and World Languages. The Commission is seeking current California teachers who help prepare beginning teachers to participate in operational scoring of the CalTPA. Training and calibration will involve a combination of at-home preparation and in-person training sessions offered in Northern and Southern California. Scoring will be completed online through a secure portal. Assessors will be paid for their time in training, calibration and scoring. For more information about assessor qualifications and to apply, visit www.ctcexams.nesinc.com.

If you know of other upcoming opportunities for math teachers and students, please let us know!
