Stories of Promising Practice

Quality Schools: North Conejos School District

The North Conejos School District in the southern part of the San Luis Valley for three years has earned the state's high honor of being a District Accredited with Distinction. This is particularly impressive given the district's demographics and that the community is also dealing with a crippling opioid epidemic.

Educator Talent

End-of-Year Deadline for Final Effectiveness Ratings for Educators

With the end of the school year approaching, it is imperative for districts and BOCES to remember that all educators should receive their final effectiveness rating two weeks prior to the end of the school year. Final effectiveness ratings should include both a professional practice rating and a Measures of Student Learning (MSL) or Measures of Student Outcomes (MSO) rating. As a result of 2015 legislation, state assessment data used in MSLs or MSOs may only be incorporated into an evaluation if it is received prior to the end of the school year. If state assessment data is not available by that time, it should be the first point of data in an educator’s evaluation the following year.

If one or more of these items are not complete, there will be a red warning bar displaying what has not yet been finished and no one will be able to sign the Final Effectiveness Rating form. Watch a video for more information regarding the Final Effectiveness Rating.

News & Notes

Celebrate Decision Day!

Wednesday, May 1, is "Decision Day," a day to celebrate students' postsecondary choices. There are endless ways schools can commemorate the occasion. Here are a few ideas:

- Sport your gear! Encourage staff and students of all ages to wear gear from their favorite college, university, apprenticeship program and military branch.

- Host a student rally. Modeled after College Signing Day, ask students to volunteer and share their plans at a school assembly.

- Set a schoolwide goal. If 100 percent of the senior class sets a plan, let students dunk a school administrator or raffle off cool prizes. Reach out to a local business for donations!

Leading into Decision Day, the Colorado Department of Higher Education is hosting weekly Q&A sessions to walk through resources and programming ideas.

A three-year PBIS training series available for district-level coaches and teams

Please join us for an informational webinar from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, May 6, on a three-year training series for district-level coaches and their accompanying school-based leadership teams on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

The webinar will describe the project, discuss commitment and readiness requirements, and reveal what is expected through participation. Our intent is to start with exploration and infrastructure development for the effective initial implementation of PBIS at Tier 1 during the first year, provide follow-up and support opportunities to move into full implementation at Tier 1 during Year 2, and install systems and structures for Tier 2 during Year 3.

Schools partnering with us through this training series will be equipped to more fully address the culture and climate of their school by creating equitable environments and create a framework that matches supports to students’ needs. Our goal is to continue scaling up and rejuvenating Colorado PBIS across the tiers!
