FISHBASE SE SYMPOSIUM 2018: FISHES AT DEPTH! [FISKAR PÅ DJUPET!]

The 16th Annual FishBase-Sweden Symposium with the theme, "Fishes at Depth [Fiskar På Djupet], a reference to the deep sea" was held at the Swedish Museum of Natural History [Naturhistorika Museet] in Stockholm on the 15th of October 2018. Six experts talked about a range of topics on the fishes of the deep sea and their adaptations. [more] [videos] 📷 credit: Hanna Pauser Lindgren

IMAGE ANALYSIS FOR UNDERWATER VIDEOS TRAINING

To commence the project with Q-quatics on underwater video image analysis, partners from the University of Western Australia (namely, Dr. Jessica Meeuwig, Director of Marine Futures Lab, School of Biological Science and Oceans Institute, and her PhD advisee Mr. Sean van Elden) trained selected staff (Rodolfo Reyes Jr., Rachel Atanacio, Michael Yap, Luisa Abucay, Jeniffer Espedido and Jeremy Jansalin) on video processing from 22-23 and 26-29 November 2018 at the Q-quatics headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. Visiting scientists from CAFS and SWIMS-HKU joined as observers. [more]

VISITING SCIENTISTS

Collaborators from The Swire Institute of Marine Science of the University of Hong Kong and Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences visited Q-quatics headquarters in November - December 2019. Ms. Cheuk Wing Li (SWIMS-HKU) came to develop her working knowledge of the operational infrastructure of the information systems and to undergo training on data encoding as part of a two-year collaborative project between SWIMS and Q-quatics.  This training will help document the marine biodiversity of Hong Kong and surrounding waters as well as identify research gaps in FishBase and SeaLifeBase. Mr. Zhang FengWei and Mr. Cheng JinXiang (CAFS) were oriented about the information system structure of FishBase and SeaLifeBase.  Their training under the Q-quatics IT Team equipped them in completing the tasks outlined in the FishBase Consortium work plan. [more

WORKSHOP ON NEW METHODS OF STOCK ASSESSMENT
The workshop on "New Methods for Stock Assessment: LBB and CMSY/BSM" was held on 28 November 2018 at Q-quatics HQ in the Philippines, conducted by Dr. Rainer Froese (GEOMAR) who is the lead author of CMSY and LBB stock assessment methods. The workshop participants were the research staff of FishBase and SeaLifeBase, visiting partners: Ms. Cheuk Wing Li (SWIMS-HKU), Mr. Sean van Elden (UWA) and Mr. Gordon Tsui (Sea Around Us), Dr. Ma. Theresa M. Mutia (FBSC-NSAP), Mr. Francisco Torres Jr. and Nicko Flores (NFRDI), and former Board Member Dr. Asuncion de Guzman (GReEn Consultancy Services). [more]
Q-QUATICS MINI-SYMPOSIUM
Q-quatics revved up with a mini-symposium, “Q-quatics 2019: Road ahead” which gathered local and international marine and freshwater scientists, and introduced the various avenues Q-quatics seeks to carry out its fisheries and oceans research mandate through valuable collaborations and partnerships with the global scientific community. [more] [see also]
WORLD CAFE WORKSHOP

The staff of Q-quatics: FishBase, SeaLifeBase and AquaMaps Teams strategized plans for 2019 through a "World Café" workshop held on 31 January 2019 at IRRI Swaminathan Hall, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. The said workshop was led and facilitated by Dr. Cornelia Nauen, Q-quatics' Board Chair and President of Mundus Maris). [more photos

Updates on rfishbase and FishBase API by rOpenSci
New version of rfishbase, v3.0.3 was out in March 2019: https://cran.r-project.org/package=rfishbaseThis version provides better performance in dealing with large queries. The rfishbase package is an interface to FishBase and SeaLifeBase, using the FishBase API.

Version February 2019 of the FishBase and SeaLifeBase data are now in the FishBase API at fishbase.ropensci.org. The FishBase API is a RESTful Application Programming Interface (API) to the FishBase and SeaLifeBase databases.

CMSY WORKSHOP IN THE PHILIPPINES

A 5-day training workshop on the "Use of CMSY Tool for the Assessment of Philippine Stocks" was organized by Q-quatics with NFRDI Philippines to introduce regional NSAP leaders to three new methods, viz.: (i) CMSY for the assessment of fish stocks using time series of catch data and estimates of resilience which can be derived from FishBase; (ii) LBB for estimating a snapshot of stock status from length-frequency data from commercial catches; (iii) AMSY for estimating stock status purely from a time series of catch per unit of effort data. [more] [photos]

Q-QUATICS' SPECIES ID TEAM  WORKSHOP NO. 1

To better internalize their observations on fish swimming behavior, and with the end goal of developing a 'pictoguide' of depth ranges for families and species groups in BRUVS videos, the Species Identification Team of Q-quatics led by Mr. Rodolfo Reyes Jr., (Q-quatics' Research Associate) held a 2-hour workshop on 22 March 2019 at the IRRI Khush Hall Conference Room, College-Los Baños, Laguna.
