Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou kātoa te whānau whānui o te Kura Pokapū o Whakatū –
Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

We farewell the following students and their whanau - off to other scities and schools over this holliday break - Oscar James, Keille Proudfoot, Rebecca Magg, Isabella Francis, Arabella & Kaydyn Thomsen and Kieran Cunliffe.
We know that you will remain a special part of our school as you go towards new horizons. Remember to keep in touch and let your teachers and friends know how you are doing.

It is with great sadness and gratitude that we farewell our amazing Deputy Principal and Learning Support coordinator Ros Allen-Hall. Those of you who have worked closely with her will know she is a skilled and tireless advocate for all our children and families - particularly for those needing extra support at times. Much of her role has been ensuring those children needing the most help have been supported, alongside their teachers. As a staff we will miss her humour, her knowledge and her challenge to always do what is best for the children in front of us.
She is excited to be continuing her career in special education services and will begin work for the Resource teachers of Learning and Behaviour in the new term. We are lucky to be able to continue to access her expertise in this role for our school and students. We know you will join with us in wishing her every success in her new role.
Those families who have worked closely with Ros will continue to be supported by John, myself and Jo Glassford, who will be acting part time in this role, until the position is filled later this year.

As the end of the term draws near I would like to congratulate all our students for the effort and enthusiasm they have bought to their learning this term - and to our hard working teachers and support staff who plan each night and turn up each day to do their absolute best to make a difference for your children- so  that they can flourish in their learning and flourish in their community.

We will look forward to seeing our school family again on 29 April for the beginning of term two, and welcoming all those new to our school next term.

Have a restful and enjoyable holiday and Easter period.

Ngā mihi
Pip

Oscar, his little sister Rita, mum and dad planted an Olive tree in the school garden. This is Oscar’s special leaving gift to Nelson Central School and his many friends to say thank you and good bye. There are lots of lovely happy memories and amazing experiences during Oscar’s learning journey at school. Oscar and his family will relocate to Christchurch middle of April. We will be coming back to Nelson for holidays and visit Nelson Central School many times in the future.

Thank you.

Kōwhai News

In Kowhai we engage each day in play based learning or tākaro kia ako. The children explore their interests, develop knowledge and skills. Some activities are ‘provocations’ set up by the teachers, others are initiated by the children.  Here are some examples of the tākaro/play that has been happening in Kōwhai.

The My Little Ponies hair salon - developing oral language, story telling, cooperative skills, listening to peers and making compromises

Making bracelets with Loom Bands - developing fine motor skills, patterning, cooperative skills and oral language.

After play based learning sessions we reflect on what has happened. We share our experiences relating to the Key Competencies from the New Zealand Curriculum. These are: Relating to Others, Managaing Self, Using Signs, Symbols and Texts, Thinking, Participating and Contributing.

Pōhutukawa News

Amazing effort by our Pōhutukawa Syndicate's superstars.  Here they are being presented with their certificates at our Syndicate Assembly last week.
In Pōhutukawa Syndicate we have been celebrating different cultures as part of our Inquiry, "Who Are We?"  Last Friday we were lucky to have Myla's mum  from Room 12 for Discovery Time.  She shared a traditional art form from Pakistan, using henna.  They loved the wonderful designs she created.

The thought bubble is the written description.  Many processes were used in these portraits including landscape drawing, portrait drawing, using repeating patterns, and painting with water colours.  Check out some of the finished art pieces below!

Saturday 18th May - Rabbit Island (western end), 3 pm

Saturday 25 May - Tahunanui Beach (next to Roller Skating rink), 3 pm

Primary Years 4-6: Boys race and girls race - 2 km

Intermediate: Boys race and girls race - 2.5 km

College: Boys race and girls race - 3 km

Children do not need to be affiliated to a school and do not need to attend all races.

Scoring system

Children will be awarded points for their place in their age division (pre school, yr 1, yr 2 etc). The first runner in each age division will get 1 point, the second 2 points and so on. Boys and girls have separate point systems. The top five scores across all age divisions count for the school total and so the winning school has the least number of points.

For example, Pink School's fastest runners are Sophie, 1st in yr 1 girls (so 1 point); Tom 1st in yr 3 boys (1 point); Henry 2nd in yr 3 boys (2 points), Meg 4th in yr 5 girls (4 points) and Jim 8th in yr 6 boys (8 points). Pink School's total is 1, 1, 2, 4 + 8 = 16 points. Green School only got 8 points (1, 1, 1, 2, 3) so they win.

Trophies will be awarded at the end of the four races.

Registration:

Pre-registration is preferred due to the sheer number of children but children can sign-in on the day from 2 pm.

Pre-registration is via nelsoncrosscountry@gmail.com
Details needed are: name
school (or home school)
school year (NOT age)
A race number will be sent by return email. The number must be written on the back of the left hand with marker pen so it is visible to recorders at the end of the race. Registration only needs to occur once as each runner uses their unique number for the whole series. Pre-registered runners do not need to sign in on the day.

Runners participate at their own risk.

Voluntary gold coin donation per family per race would be gratefully appreciated. This is to assist with race expenses and any left over will go towards the inter-regional cross country team. To be paid on the day.

Further information, race results and any cancellations (unlikely except in the event of extreme and/or dangerous conditions) can be found on our facebook site https://www.facebook.com/groups/1718343551777300/ Race results will also be sent out to the schools each week. We also have a website https://sites.google.com/view/nelsoncrosscountryleague

School Community Group

Summary of Nelson Central School Community Group (NCSCG) 2018 Activities and Plans for 2019.

Kia ora,

  • The Nelson Central School Community Group (NCSCG) runs events which bring our community together for active, fun and health promoting family activities. Many of these events raise money to provide extra resources, facilities and opportunities for our tamariki.

  • In 2018 we raised a total of $25,138.73. Additional information on how this money was raised, what we have funded and events we already have planned for this year is available below.

  • The key point is that for these great community fundraising events to run we need parent/whānau involvement. As well as members for the school community group, we also need help to organise and run these events.

We advertise events and request for helpers in the school newsletter. You will also receive information and requests for help from our CG Class Reps.

If you are interested in contributing your time and energy by being a member or helping in another way (e.g. being on our helpers list, or being a CG class rep), please contact your class teacher or email scg@nelsoncentral.school.nz.

The (very friendly and fun) School Community Group usually meet a couple of times per term in the staff room. Look on the calendar in the NCS’s website for the dates and times. - Everyone’s welcome.

  • 2018 was a busy year for the NCSCG.

We organised the following events and fundraising activities:

Event                                               Profit

                Community Picnic 2018                             $    24.68
                   Grocery Hamper                                           $   306.00
                          Central Challenge (Rogaine)                           $  10,796.12
                          Disco                                                                 $   1,416.00
Celebration of Music (choir and kapa haka)  $   3,269.82
                        Central Crank (MTB)                                       $  1,273.86
                 Wheels Wednesday term 4                         $ 301.00
                         Calendar Art                                                    $  2,370.25
Food Central Recipe book sales                   $ 5,381.00
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day ------

                     Total Profit                                                 $   25,138.73

From these funds we have donated a total of $16,000.00 to Nelson Central School to be used on:

-IT Equipment (10 Class Chromebooks)

-Audio Equipment/ Sound System

-Junior Sand Pit

-Sports Equipment (revamp equipment in the PE shed & replace missing equipment)

-Arts & Sports (To help support the Co-ordinators)

-Assembly Fund 20% of major event profits*

*20% of profits made from major fundraising efforts in 2018 (totalling $4,893.87) were put aside to help fund the planned Outdoor Assembly Area, as we are in desperate need of a covered area for our school community to assemble in all weather. We’ve decided this year (2019) that 20% of all fundraisers will be set aside for this cause.

  • Already this year we have organised the School Picnic, sold hot drinks at the Wheels Wednesday & financially supported the Senior Triathlon.

We have many other activities planned for the rest of the year, including;

-Selling hot drinks at future Wheels Wednesday/Roll To School events.

-Whole school Disco - June

-The new look Central Crank- Mountain bike event - September (2019’s major fundraising event)

-NCS Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day - 29th October

-Calendar Art

-Mural for the west fence (near PE shed)

-Art extension workshops for all seniors - term 3

We also have some other ideas in the planning including; a gardening working bee (to weed and prune the sensory garden), selling reusable produce bags, combine events with Te Pouahi to support them with fundraising for Kapa Haka nationals. Look out for something special come Matariki this year.

N.B. The Central Challenge (Rogaine event) and the new look Central Crank (Mountain Bike event) will now be run on alternate years with the Central Crank becoming a larger event.
