Compendium of Microbiological Criteria of Food
FSANZ has released an update of this resource (September 2018). It provides  microbiological criteria for specific food commodities and microbiological guideline criteria used for ready-to-eat foods. The 2018 version includes process hygiene criteria for dairy products and a new section on environmental monitoring.

Table 3 Interpretation of results for standard plate counts in RTE foods differentiates between Category 2 A and 2 B for acceptable standard plate counts for RTE  that have been cooked but there is minimal handling or storage, versus those cook chill foods, packaged for extended life.
The compendium is a essential reference for those responsible for verifying microbiological safety of foods. Download the compendium here.

The Australian Food and Grocery Council has updated the Product Recall Form ( update March 2019) - a lot of businesses use  this form to notify major retailers and government agencies or a product recall or withdrawal. Download your updated AFGC form here.

FSANZ has released their annual report on recalls in 2018. There were 100 recalls in 2018, a significant increase from previous years.  46 per cent of the recalls in Australia are due to undeclared allergens.
“FSANZ has identified four key causes of allergen-related recalls, including lack of skills and knowledge of labelling requirements, supplier verification, packaging errors and accidental cross contamination".

International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative.
Australia is about to implement the International Standards for Dysphagia Diets.
This is a change in definitions and terminology for texture modified foods and fluids, which are used in health care and aged care facilities.

On 1 May 2019 the new IDDSI system will apply to commercially ready to use, pre-packaged goods and at facility level in food service in Australian Healthcare and Aged Care. The standardised terms will replace/ reinstate terms previously used such as "minced and moist". The main changes are the link between the food texture and the fluid thickness and the addition of a new (slightly thick) fluid thickness.

Some light relief from the land of "Brexit"....
  •  A man from Fife, UK had a shock recently when his supermarket bag of Bistro Salad had a baby crow inside the pack.
  •  The recent world nettle eating championships in Dorset, UK have been held and our winner was Mr. Phil Thorne who chewed through 31.7 metres of nettles in one hour, one 60 cm stalk at a time. That beat his previous best of 29 metres.
  •  An unemployed 32-year-old Somerset, UK man went almost blind from drinking 20 pints of scrumpy a day, from the cyanide in the apple pips leached out in the brewing process.
