Let's Learn About...
Travel back to the 1600s and you would be able to witness the Native Americans playing a sport they created to keep their warriors fit, for recreation, and for religious reasons.

The history of the origins of many sports is steeped in a rich story. Most of the sports played in Australia have originated overseas, but that doesn't stop us from loving and excelling in these sports.

One of these sports first hit the shores of Australia in 1876 in Melbourne. Just 30 years later the first international match was held against Canada at the MCG in front of 30,000 spectators!  Since then, the game has been modified to become the fantastic sport it is today!

Love Sport? Let's learn about... Lacrosse

What is Lacrosse?

Lacrosse is a team sport that combines the skills required to play soccer, hockey, and basketball. BUT it is played in the air!

In fact, lacrosse skills are so transferable that AFL Premiership coaches Alastair Clarkson (Hawthorn), David Parkin (Carlton) and Mark Williams (Port Adelaide) used lacrosse tactics to give their team the winning edge.

The object of the game is to score more goals than the other team. To do this, teammates throw, catch, carry and shoot the ball with a lacrosse stick. The game and equipment is modified to suit many different people. From children to adults, men to women, it is a game that can be enjoyed by all.

Benefits

Lacrosse provides a range of physical and mental benefits. It allows players to develop their motor skills through focusing on throwing and catching with a stick. It also improves cardiovascular fitness, strength, speed, and agility. Best of all, lacrosse provides a great social environment where players and their parents can make new and lifelong friends.

What makes Lacrosse unique?

Lacrosse has everything you could ask for in a sport. It is exciting, skilful and FUN!  Whether you love scoring goals, being a part of a solid defence, or doing a bit of everything, there is a spot for you in every team.

Lacrosse is known as “the fastest sport on two feet” and is growing across the world. It’s one of the biggest sports in America and Canada, and is rapidly growing across Europe and Asia. Even though lacrosse is a lesser-known sport in Australia, we are ranked as one of the best countries in the world!

Lacrosse for All Abilities Activities

'Stick It' - Lacrosse AAA across Victoria
Lacrosse Victoria have developed an innovative new version of the sport, that has been modified to suit all abilities. Currently funded by VicHealth to develop the program and after successfully trialling 'Stick It' at Carlton Baths, the skills of catching, throwing and scooping are now being offered in Geelong, with plans to deliver come and try opportunities across Victoria.

A previous Stick it participant's parent had this to say:

"‘I like having a girls team sport for her to participate in. The program was a great pace for the girls - it was great new skills giving them practice of hand eye coordination. But the best thing was your (the coaches) enthusiasm and energy!"
