Brexit: Latest guidance & Health Secretary letter

Health Secretary Matt Hancock wrote to community pharmacies and other healthcare providers last Friday with guidance on a possible no-deal Brexit. [As this newsletter was being sent out, there was still a possibility that the UK could leave the EU on Friday (12th April) without a deal.] Read the letter and PSNC’s Brexit guidance for community pharmacies.

Mandatory pharmacy campaign: Oral health workshop (9th/15th May)

Oral health is the mandatory pharmacy campaign for May-June 2019 so this workshop is ideally timed. It brings pharmacy and dental teams together to focus on promoting all aspects of oral health, including how to prevent tooth decay in under-fives and self-checking to identify early stages of oral cancers. Medication is also on the agenda, with prescribing updates and common side-effects of anticholinergic medication.

It’s set to be a great event, with lots of interaction and opportunity for pharmacy and dental teams to share their learning. You’ll also get tips and ideas on:

  • How to engage and promote the oral health campaign;
  • Raise awareness of disease and prevalence rate of mouth cancer in Greater Manchester; and
  • The importance of checking our own mouths regularly and of going to the dentist.

There are two dates to choose from. Both events run from 6.30pm-9.30pm. Registration & buffet: 6.30pm. Training: 7pm-9.30pm. Book now:

Referring patients for copper IUD for emergency contraception

(Manchester, Stockport, Tameside & Glossop, Trafford)

Pharmacies in Manchester, Stockport, Tameside & Glossop, and Trafford that need to refer a patient to get a copper IUD fitted for emergency contraception – or that have any queries about it – should follow this referral process.

Consultation on GM pharmacist training/protocols for OTC products

Greater Manchester commissioners are keen to hear community pharmacists’ views on what training, protocols and other support is needed in light of changes in prescribing practice for OTC products. We would really encourage pharmacists to complete this survey.

GPs across Greater Manchester GPs will be prescribing far fewer medicines for self-limiting or minor illness (other than those with long-term conditions). This means that more patients will be directed to community pharmacies to seek advice and then purchase these items.

Commissioners want to make sure that pharmacists feel comfortable providing advice to these patients on their clinical conditions. They have launched a consultation survey to hear what support/training community pharmacists would like. Complete the survey.

GM Primary Care Summit tomorrow (11th April)

Pharmacists and pharmacy teams are invited to attend the seventh annual Greater Manchester Primary Care Summit on 11th April. The summit will update primary care providers, commissioners, social care and partner organisations on key developments, nationally and in Greater Manchester. It will also celebrate the innovative ways in which community pharmacies and other primary care providers are supporting patients and improving people’s health. Attendees will be able to attend two workshops during the day. Find out more.

Pharmacy #HelpUsHelpYou resources

Public Health England is keen for your feedback on the campaign resources that pharmacies received for the national #HelpUsHelpYou ‘Before it gets worse’ publicity campaign earlier this year. The campaign encouraged people to go to their local pharmacy at the first sign of any illness for advice and help. Complete the survey.

CPPE & RPS event supporting revalidation (15th May)
Includes peer discussion with a focus on mental health

CPPE and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Greater Manchester branch are running a collaborative event on 15th May to support you in the peer discussion part of revalidation. The event is open to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pre-regs, and you can either attend with a peer or be paired with someone on the night.

The session will use the learning from the CPPE mental health cards posted out during CPPE’s learning campaign last year as the basis to start a peer discussion. (If you don’t have the cards to hand, you can get them from the CPPE website.) The cards contain quick challenges aimed at those in non-specialist roles. You don’t need to undertake the whole programme to attend this event to support revalidation. Just work through the card(s) that are relevant to you.

The event also includes community pharmacist & research associate Dr Hayley Gorton explaining how pharmacy teams can play an important role in self-harm awareness and suicide prevention, which fits nicely with Mental health awareness week which runs from the 13th -19th May 2019.

The event is at Stanley House, Audenshaw, Manchester, M35 5GB on 15th may. It starts with registration & a buffet at 6.30pm, then discussion from 7pm-9.30pm. Book here or phone 0161 778 4000 quoting event ID 48930.

Salford: Please stock Nulbia 5% in your pharmacy

NHS Salford CCG is asking all pharmacies in Salford to order and stock Nulbia 5%. GPs are being asked to prescribe Nulbia 5% as the preferred numbing cream for patients referred to the paediatric phlebotomy service, following recent changes to the service and a drive to improve quality. All pharmacies in Salford are asked to ensure you stock Nulbia 5% from your wholesalers.

Stockport: Integrated ways of working (event)

This interactive workshop will bring Stockport community pharmacies, GP practices and practice-based pharmacists together to look at how closer collaboration can enhance patient care and enable all professionals/services to work most effectively within their local areas. It’s particularly timely, given the NHS Long-Term Plan and local commissioners’ plans for neighbourhood-level collaboration between GPs, pharmacies and other professionals. The event will use Medicines Use Reviews (MURs) as a building block for integrated working with GP practices.

We’ve had fantastic feedback for previous sessions on integrated ways of working between community pharmacies and GP practices, so this new event is not to be missed! The session will also include resources to deliver the mandatory oral health campaign in May-June. It’s open to all pharmacies in Stockport and is on Monday 29th April, 6.30pm-9.30pm, at Alma Lodge Hotel, Buxton Road, Stockport. Find out more & book.
