Here's the latest from Portland Museum

Welcome to our new monthly newsletter! Every month we will share what's coming up and what's around the corner. (Derby put us a little behind schedule for this month.)

Without further ado, here is what's coming in May:

Second Saturday, May 11th, 12 pm to 4 pm

Every second Saturday of the month, join us for free museum admission and a free children's art project led by art educator Sarah Hall. For May, we are getting creative with driftwood. Stop by any time between 12pm and 4pm to make a Mother's Day gift from the river!

New Exhibition: Book as Narrative Object
May 30 - August 31, 2019

As part of our current Book Arts program, this exhibition explores the structure of a book and how it influences -- and possibly builds upon -- a reader's interpretation of the narrative. Among the items exhibited will be unique artist books on loan from Bridwell Art Library (University of Louisville).

Preservation Camp
Grades 5th - 9th
June 24 - 28
Expand your child's education this summer, and send them to Portland Museum's Squire Earick House - the oldest, still standing, timber-framed house in Jefferson County!

For the first few days, your child will learn about Portland's social history and historical architecture. The camp will also go on daily trips to the museum's Squire Earick House where students will work with various public history and archaeology professionals to understand what it means to have a historic house in a museum collection. Plus, we will visit a couple local historic house museums!

Overall, campers will learn to research and evaluate sources pertaining to historical culture and explore the 19th century techniques used to create the Squire Earick House.
  • June 24th - 28th (10am - 5pm) - cost $150
* A limited number of scholarships are available.

Volunteer and Internship Opportunities Available!

The responsibilities of a Volunteer mainly include:
- serving as the Front Desk Attendant
- administering gallery guide pamphlets
- answering possible questions from visitors
* During special events, such as art exhibitions or Second Saturday, volunteers may sign-up to offer extra help throughout the events.

For the Internship (unpaid), specific projects will be assigned based on each intern's interests, but they cover the areas of:
- nonprofit management
- communications/development
- collections/archives
- programming/education in public history and fine arts

Overall, anyone interested in the operations of an independent nonprofit and/or an arts & culture/history museum should apply, and the museum can help facilitate internship credit hours as needed.

Of course, part of the function of a nonprofit involves changes. Therefore, as changes occur during the summer, new opportunities may arise for volunteers and interns.

Please send any inquiries or resumes to Bailey O'Leary at bailey.oleary@PortlandKY.org.
