What's New at NCTR?
Congratulations to Travis Bristol, an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education and a member of NCTR’s Board of Directors, for his Emerging Scholar award from the Comparative and International Education Society. The award recognizes scholars who demonstrate excellence in creativity, inventiveness, and cutting-edge vision and display in their work focused on the empowerment of people of the African Diaspora.
Partner Updates
The Seattle Teacher Residency was recognized by the district’s superintendent in her first everState of the District address. The residency “has helped us to create a pipeline of incredible teachers for Seattle Public Schools and helps us to recruit and retain educators of color,” said Superintendent Denise Juneau. Last year, STR agreed to a $251,000 contract with the Seattle school’s Board of Directors to develop teachers for the district.

Announcing the 2019 Mentor of the Year Nominees
This year, for the first time, NCTR will be naming a Mentor of the Year during our annual Symposium in Chicago. Similar to our Resident of the Year award, our new mentor prize aims to celebrate the commitment, the mastery, and the passion that mentors bring to our Network partner programs.
The inaugural winner will be selected from nominations received from 15 residency partners. Nominees were selected based on their commitment to resident growth and learning, and their work to make their practice explicit and visible for their residents. Additionally, nominees promote and practice inquiry and reflection of teaching practices, and they champion, model and continually learn about cultural competence.
Successful residencies have overcome challenges when it comes to recruiting mentors. In the latest video in our series on Teacher Educators, we learn about the strategies and tactics used to build a strong pipeline of candidates.
Grant Opportunity
The Department of Education is accepting new applications for 2019 Teacher Quality Partnership grants to fund teacher residency programs. This new round will prioritize applications from partnerships that prepare educators “to deliver rigorous instruction in computer science and improve student achievement.” Between 15 and 20 grants will be given, ranging from $500,000 to $1 million. The deadline to apply is May 20, although the agency “strongly recommends” submitting a notice of intent to apply before May 3.
