Welcome to SCCAN's April 2019 Newsletter
View this email in your browser
Hi <<First Name>>,
this month, we are reaching out to you for your help to keep SCCAN going as we've just learnt with shock about a total funding cut by the Scottish Government.
Nevertheless, we also have good news for you from our Europe-wide umbrella network Ecolise as well as from the Borders. See what else is on this spring:

Best wishes,
 Katharina

Can you support us?

At a time when climate change has never been higher up the news agenda and when our membership is growing faster than ever, the Scottish Government have very unexpectedly decided to cut funding for SCCAN completely and without warning. (They have granted us £10k per year in recent years to enable us to run basic network functions). This leaves us with a short-term funding crisis and more dependent on volunteers than ever.

If you believe in the importance of community-led climate action and you value being part of a community-led network then please do consider making a donation!

Whatever amount you or your organisation  is able to donate towards keeping our  network going will be put to very good use. All funding received currently leverages five times that amount of voluntary, in-kind contributions.

You can donate here.

Thank you so much for your support for keeping SCCAN going!

Let's Celebrate on Sustainable Communities Day!

It's time to Celebrate! Watch the video for the type of events that can be organised
While core funding got cut, SCCAN has managed to secure a grant from Ecolise, the European Netowrk of Sustainable Communities we are member of, to celebrate European Sustainable Communities Day in Scotland.

What is the European Sustainable Communities Day?
The Sustainable Communities Day, which this year falls on Saturday, the 21st September 2019, is a celebration of local communities across Europe taking action for a better, more sustainable world.
We chose the theme of “Let’s celebrate” to celebrate in and with our villages, towns, cities and communities what our now over 230 SCCAN community members have achieved with their efforts.

We therefore invite all our members to organise events such as open days, apple harvests or shared meals on or around the 21st September and we offer 10 grants of £200 to help with the costs of organising these events.

If you organise regional events which bring together several community organisations from different localities, you may also be able to benefit from additional funding support from the Scottish Government funded Community Learning Exchange.
Once you have an event planned, register it on the dedicated website to promote it.

So get your creative & organisational hats on as more info on the grant application process will follow soon. The application deadline for the grants is expected to be in June.

Rethinking Waste - New SCCAN podcast series

Listen to the first episode here
SCCAN has just launched its new Future Voices podcast series called "Stories from the frontline of community-led climate action".

We hold a vision of a zero-carbon future, reached through communities becoming empowered and resilient enough to grasp the opportunity to build a different, fairer society that regenerates our communities as well as our environment.

Many glimpses of such a future already exist across Scotland. Through a series of short podcasts, ‘Future Voices’ will be telling the stories of some of these initiatives.

In the first series, ‘Rethinking Waste‘, we will be visiting a range of projects that are not only changing waste into a resource but are helping to build more caring, sharing and stronger communities in the process.

Is there something happening in your community that you would like to share? We’d love to hear from you: get in touch.

Likewise, if you would be interested to learn skills in podcasting, we are developing a skillshare workshop to cascade skills through SCCAN. Please get in touch if you are interested to know more.

New Members

This month, we are very happy to welcome the following 3 organisations and 7 individuals to the SCCAN family:
  1. Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) - (Associate) SCIAF is the official overseas aid and development charity of the Catholic Church in Scotland, providing long term development support and emergency help in 27 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. We work in Scotland providing development education programmes within schools, parishes and community groups, developing policy responses to issues of global poverty, and advocating for change at the global and national level. Since climate justice is a top priority for SCIAF, we help communities overseas to adapt to the impacts of climate change, and we lobby our national and global leaders to take more action.
  2. Lower Impact Living (Lil) CIC - (Associate) Our aim is to engage as many people in East Lothian in behaviour change to improve our environment and limit our negative impacts including climate change. Collaboration is vital in this crusade, so the more connected we can all be the better.
  3. Scottish Community Development Centre (SCDC) - (Associate) We work across Scotland with communities, practitioners and policy makers to build on their skills and ideas when working together in communities. Climate change is a priority among communities we work with as well as a key factor in social justice locally and globally. Being part of SCCAN enables us to connect to this agenda more fully.

PLUS 7 individual members Kate, Lindsay, Harriet, Teri, Federico, Ann and Mhaire (full names not disclosed due to privacy reasons).

                                 Welcome onboard to all!
