Lease Accounting... There's More

It's been nearly a year since we wrote our Operating Lease Report: What Lies Beneath highlighting the potential impact of the new lease accounting standard on financial statements. Today we're pleased to give a shout out to our friends at the CFA Institute for their comprehensive look at lease accounting. See pages 22, 73-76 for the Calcbench citations.

What TJX Cos. teaches about leasing costs. TJX Cos., owner of TJ Maxx and other retail stores, recently reported its 2018 financials. Calcbench Cool Insights

Capex spending, both up and down. We examined the capex spending of more than 10,000 firms for the last five years. Yes, spending overall is declining (see chart below) - but among large firms, the picture is quite different. See what we found.

Restructuring costs on the rise. Restructuring costs among the S&P 500 are up, employee severance costs are down. View the firms with the largest reported restructuring costs since 2016. See how to find what those costs entail and whether the structure at the end of it all delivers expected results.

Restructuring costs up close. You can also use our Interactive Disclosure Tool to examine a company's reported costs for restructuring projects from quarter to quarter, to see if that spending is on track. We reviewed Kimberly Clark Corp.'s 2018 restructuring plan as an example.

When Amazon takes over the world. Amazon Web Services, the website hosting business for Amazon, is growing like crazy. We played with the numbers to see when AWS takes over Amazon's retail operations, and then the world. Not as far-fetched as you might think.

Our latest master class video includes three steps every financial analyst should apply when reviewing a company. Watch and learn.

We would love to hear from you.
