Featured artists for May
Nancy Anderson and Dee Brausch

Nancy Anderson

Anderson’s art work continues to evolve with an increasing emphasis on cut-paper creations in addition to her calligraphy. In her work, lettering often becomes its own layer as she builds images and words.

In this show you will see the variety of approaches Anderson takes with lettering – tiny writing made with a pointed pen, drawn letters, cut-paper letters, italic letters written with a broad edge pen, and folded pen letterforms. With the use of a folded pen she creates letters that have dramatic thicks and thins and a less formal look to them. In some of the pieces, the lettering is combined with cut-paper flowers.

The blending of backgrounds and quotes is something that she strives to achieve. The words and images have a connection. Each piece has layers that are built up to provide texture and interest. The quotes are ones that she has collected and finds inspirational. One of her new pieces has a background that was made by painting through cheesecloth.

She takes the same approach with her handmade cards as she does with her bigger pieces. Each card is made using cut paper that she has painted and then assembled. Some have words on them; some do not.

As for materials, she moves between inks, watercolor and acrylic paints and cut paper. Her studio is filled with bits of paper, which are the building blocks of her art.

Dee Brausch

I have been a hobbyist photographer since high school in the late 1970’s. Since 2006 I have turned the hobby into a part-time business. I photograph weddings, events, fundraisers, portraits, landscapes …anything! I like the excitement and pressure of capturing a wedding to standing outside on a moonless night to photograph the stars.

To me every photograph is a memory, caught and preserved for recollection later of the thought, feelings and physical atmosphere of the day it was created. I love that a photo can trigger so many things in us.
