A Home Grown Fair

A word from 2019 Fair President, Marjie Pollard

Hello Fair Family and Friends!

What an honor it is to be serving as the 83rd President of the Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo. As your 2019 President, I am dedicated to look for opportunities for our youth, commitments from our business neighbors, and support from our community. We look forward to another exciting year as we strive to deliver to the entire family, a ten-day, action-packed Fair of fun, education and entertainment.

Being a fifth-generation fair-goer and participant, the Fair gave me a learning and growing environment. I have fond memories of attending the Fair--from the laughs and thrills my sisters and I found in the carnival, to watching my grandmother purchase the Grand Champion Turkey year after year, to learning from my mother and aunts the true meaning of volunteering and giving back as they worked in the Women’s Department. As I continue to enjoy all these values and traditions while making new memories with my own family and grandchildren, I find it only fitting to choose as this year’s Fort Bend County Fair theme, “A Home Grown Fair”.

The Fort Bend County Fair is where I would come to know the true meaning of helping our youth and putting education within reach of their goals. As we focus on our mission of “Benefiting Youth, Promoting Agriculture, Supporting Education”, we take pride in having awarded over the years millions of dollars to Fort Bend County youth through our auctions and scholarships.

This family-orientated event offers something for everyone, for all ages. Where else can a community come together and experience the excitement a Fair brings with activities that include a livestock show and rodeo, musical entertainment, carnival, specialty acts and children activities, cookoff, auctions, great food and much more, all in one place.

The success of the Fort Bend County Fair would not be possible if not for the spirit and dedication of the Fair Staff and my fellow Directors, the countless hours put in by a large number of volunteers, the commitment from our sponsors and donors, support of our auction buyers, and all in the community who in some way or another back our cause. My deep-felt appreciation to you all.

And to my family and devoted husband, Charles, for your unconditional support, patience and love, thank you for always being there for me.

The Fort Bend County Fair has been creating memories for over 83 years, so whether you are continuing a family tradition or just starting one, we invite you to be a part of “A Home Grown Fair”.

Here’s to Memories!

Anglers Wanted!

Boots & Buckles on the Bay RETURNS

Let the reels fly and lines get tight at the Fort Bend County Fair Association's Sixth Annual Boots & Buckles on the Bay fishing tournament. Fishing teams will be competing for over $8,000 in cash and prizes including trophy belt buckles, boots, and custom Frio Ice Chests on Saturday, May 18th in Matagorda. The fishing tournament is one of several events that are held throughout the year to help bring awareness to the Fort Bend County Fair and raise scholarship monies.

The Grand Champion team of anglers will take home money, trophy belt buckles, a custom Frio Ice Chest, and a $250 gift certificate for a pair of boots for each team member. Team Stringers, Individual Fish, Junior Anglers, and Side Pots will be optional entries as part of the tournament. Entry fee for a maximum 4-member team is $300. “Every year the fishing tournament has grown. We doubled in size of entries last year and we continue to offer our competing teams a real chance at some great prizes and cash. We are excited for our teams,” says 2019 Fort Bend County Fair President, Marjie Pollard.

Todd Armstrong Shows, Rincon Air & Heat Co., LLC., and Frio Ice Chests are sponsoring the event. In 2018, over forty-five teams competed in the tournament. Teams that get registered prior to May 2 will be eligible at a chance to win their entry fee back.  The weigh-in station will open at 2 p.m. and close at 4 p.m. the day of the tournament. An awards ceremony will take place at the Matagorda Harbor Pavilion at 5 p.m.

Men, women, and children will be fishing starting early Saturday morning at 6 a.m. A captain's meeting will be held on Friday, May 17th at Poco Playa in Matagorda. Entry forms and tournament rules for the fishing tournament are available at FortBendCountyFair.com or call the Fair Office at 281-342-6171. See you on the Bay in May!

Livestock Corner

Taking Care of Business

The road to the Steer Show is in full motion. 39 steers made their way through the 2019 Fort Bend County Fair Steer Tag-In. Show exhibitors and their Steers represented schools and areas from all over Fort Bend County. “This is just the beginning for our kids who will be showing a steer at the Fair. These kids will be getting up early caring, feeding, and working with their steers right up until fair time. Many of these exhibitors will have one or two more livestock projects, so they will be busy," said Bobby Poncik Co-Director of Livestock.

The steer tag in is the first of the livestock tag ins to take place for the 2019 fair livestock competitions. The 2019 Fort Bend County Fair Steer Show will be held on Saturday, September 28th. Judging will begin at 6:30 pm in Barn H. The top 27 steers will be eligible to sell in the Jr. Livestock Auction. See you at the fair!
