Greetings, BRRC!

You would know that we have added a couple of fun runs to our events calendar in recent years. Also, we have been adding events to one of the many communities that may enjoy seeing more of us, see our commitment to wellness through physical fitness and running- that would be a good thing for our mission, as well.  To be sure, we are continuing to keep that mission in front of us.  And so, this year, to answer that call, (and to fill our thirst for a fun run earlier in the year!), we are adding a Cinco de Mayo Fun Run!

In 1862, Napoleon Bonaparte’s ambitions included invading Mexico, a sovereign State like us.  The ambition was to collect tax and take over.  And, on the Fifth of May, Cinco de Mayo, the mighty French Foreign Legion had the Mexicans significantly outgunned and outmanned at the Battle of Puebla.  But the French had a very bad day, and lost, turning the tide for Mexico.  On that day, that year, we Americans were of no help, as we were rather preoccupied with our Civil War.  But, all importantly, the theme of a homeland, a sovereign state, having the Absolute Right to Self Determination is so USA.  We recognize that right here in America, like nowhere else.  In fact, we celebrate that right by pursuing happiness as we please, including running!  So, Happy Cinco de Mayo to Mexico, and to all!

Our Cinco de Mayo Fun Run is on Thursday, May 2nd  in Highlandtown at 6:30 PM start time. The Monument City Brewing Company is only in its second year there, and is an expansive and successful business addition to the community.  The big parking lot at the back of the building is a good place for us to gather.  From there, we will be running on mostly sidewalks, and staying together in groups, as we pass through Patterson Park, Fells Point, and of course, returning to Highlandtown.  This is about 4.5 miles if you do not take any of the many shortcuts, or log extra loops in Patterson Park.   We plan to return to Monument by 7:30.  If you cannot make the run, you can join us at 7:30.  Monument City Brewing welcomes dogs, children, has a food truck, indoor and outdoor areas, and has live music and a comedian scheduled…..we will be mixing in with the sprawling Monument City crowd, of course!

Wear your greens and reds, or come as you are!  Yes, we will have free themed Cinco de Mayo bling, and a free to members Cinco de Mayo themed gaiter/headband.  A great deal, it is cool, you will love it, I hope!

We will have event day sign up by 6 PM to sign you in, there are no sign up costs to our members, and only donations will be accepted on event day. BRRC members and your guests are welcome.  For all the information, go to our cool BRRC calendar or visit our Facebook page. Please consider casually RSVPing on our Facebook page, or by writing Valencia at president@brrc.com, or me, Henry Peck, at vp@brrc.com or the club at info@brrc.com , so we can get an estimate on numbers and have enough Mexican themed food treats after the run at Monument!

Happy Running!
