Reaching the unreached with health services, resources, and information.
Dear CSI Friends, Partners, and Donors:

I thank Childbirth Survival International (CSI) founders, Stella Mpanda and Tausi Suedi, CSI staff, partner organizations, donors, and you for the warm welcome. I am genuinely excited and stepped into my new role by attending the 2019 World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, DC where I built on existing partnerships and pursued new ones to advance CSI's mission.

CSI's 2018-2023 Strategic Plan clearly outlines priority areas and I am confident in the coming months, in-country teams will continue to achieve goals and exceed set milestones in reaching the unreached with health services, resources, and information. Within my few weeks at CSI, voices from the community, government leaders, and partners truly highlight CSI's unique approach of putting the people and their concerns first, building trust, and transforming lives.

In this combined Quarter I newsletter and April Digest, we share great updates and I hope you find value in reading our e-news. For more information, to collaborate, to fund, or to make a donation, I can be reached at bhim.bk@childbirthsurvivalinternational.org.

Sincerely,
Bhim Bahadur BK, CEO

CSI Uganda's 4th Annual End Cervical Cancer Outreach
A 33.6% prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) among women in Uganda combined with low screening uptake has resulted in the country having one of the highest cervical cancer incidence rates in the world of 47.5 per 100,000 per year (HPV Information Center, 2016). Since 2015, CSI Uganda has conducted annual comprehensive cervical cancer outreach services in Wakiso District: increasing awareness, promoting prevention, increasing number of adolescent girls receiving the HPV vaccine, screening women using acetic acid, treating precancerous lesions onsite, coordinating referrals for women with advanced development of cervical cancer, and following up with women. As of March 2019, at least 450 women and 150 adolescent girls (9-15 yo) have been impacted and saved from cervical cancer.
CSI's Voice in Ending Gender-Based Violence
Gender-based violence is a cross-cutting theme in communities in sub-Saharan Africa where CSI is currently implementing grassroots programs in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. It's not practical to focus on gaps in health systems without focusing on deeply-rooted cultural practices such female genital mutilation, child marriage, denying girls the opportunity to go to school, denying women their rights to own land or become financially empowered. In a recently published blog by Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) at the U.S. Department of State, Tausi Suedi, shared an interesting perspective to inspire next generation leaders in Africa to work together to end gender-based violence starting with their families and communities.
Mother's Day 2019: Save Mothers of Africa
Honor a mother who died in childbirth. Honor a mother who survived a near-miss. Honor a mother who dreams to celebrate mother's day.
"Access to quality basic healthcare services is a universal human right; it is a moral obligation to reach the unreached with health services, resources, and information." ~ CSI Founders, April 2013.
