Upcoming Math Professional Development

Problem Solving Cycle

The Math Problem Solving Cycle Summer Institute will be held on June 5th and June 6th.

June 5th:  Explore culturally responsive strategies within powerful math classrooms. What does it take to create a culture of learning and how do teachers manage collaborative groups for productive struggle and inquiry? How do we as educators listen to students and pay attention to whose voices are heard?

June 6th:  Explore various uses of video for visioning and reflection on cycles of inquiry for culturally responsive pedagogies. Learn the structure of the Math Problem Solving Cycle for strengthening responsive math department professional learning communities in service of students.

The Math Problem Solving Cycle Summer Institute is open to all middle school math teachers and administrators. Space is limited, and priority will be given to math teachers and administrators of Problem Solving Schools. Participants will be paid 12 extended hours for the 2-day institute.

Please register via the Google Form in the flyer. Contact person: Alisa Brown.

Complex Instruction

The Complex Instruction Leadership Retreat will be held on June 5th in the Cabrillo Multipurpose Room. This will be an opportunity for leadership teams to think about goals teams want to work towards next year. Teams will also have some planning time to think about how they will go about learning together throughout the year. All participants should have RSVP'd with Angela Torres.

New Teacher Orientation

If you have new teachers joining your math team, please encourage them to attend the sessions about the Math Core Curriculum at the New Teacher Orientation (NTO). On Monday, August 5th, the first day of the NTO, there will be two sessions designed for Secondary Math Teachers.

  • Secondary Math Core Curriculum Part 1: Overview

We look forward to meeting your new teachers in August!

Core Curriculum News

Materials

As we approach the end of the year, the Math Department is preparing for next year’s Math Core Curriculum printing. We have reached out to schools to make sure you get the right materials at the beginning of the 2019–20 school year.

Some FAQ:

Are there significant revisions to the grades 6–8 math curricula?
NO, there are only a few minor corrections. As always, the latest version of the curriculum is available online.

Can I reuse materials from last year?
YES! You can reuse leftover student books that say "2018 Edition," and you don't need new teacher materials if you have them already.

When will math materials be delivered to our site?
Deliveries of fall semester materials are planned for August 5–16. Spring semester units will be delivered in December.
