The Fledgling--Week of April 26, 2019

From Mother Megan:

Easter arrived, as gloriously as ever.  If you had a chance to partake of the Holy Week services at St. John's, then you know what a wonderful experience they were.

And I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who pitched in to make Holy Week and Easter 2019 such a magnificent event.  Liturgy is always a team sport, and never is that more true than around the major feasts of the church.  Our liturgical experience would not have been possible this year without the hard work of:
  • the Altar Guild, who showed up Saturday after Saturday to make everything remotely-brass-affiliated in the sanctuary shine, and who calmly dealt with all of my suggestions.
  • The lay readers, who read everything with enthusiasm  and grace, sometimes even in parts, so the Word of God could be absorbed and proclaimed
  • The acolytes and eucharistic ministers, who graciously help out with whatever the frazzled clergy need help with during the liturgy, and make it all look on-purpose, and prayerful.
  • The organist and the choir, who work so hard to make our music sound absolutely effortless, so that the congregation can be focused on the musical praise of God.
  • The ushers and greeters, who worked tirelessly to welcome all of our guests and visitors this past week, so everyone might experience Christ's hospitality.
  • The office staff, who printed all the bulletins, set up the spaces, cleaned and then cleaned again, and didn't blink when I asked for help running "Fire Experiments."
  • Everyone who pitched in, lit candles, sorted bulletins, came early to "see what needed to be done", stayed late "just to help", gave someone a ride, invited someone new, showed someone what the right page was,
Clergy are lucky enough to show up, and say the words, but it is the dedicated work of the many who truly make liturgy shine.
Thank you again to the entire St. John's community/

If you have a submission to the Fledgling, send it to the office by Thursday morning for inclusion on Friday.  Bulletin announcements should be into the office by Wednesday morning.
  • If you know of someone who would like to receive the Fledgling, please send their email to the office.

Prayer for the week

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ's Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Laundry Love is up and running!

Laundry Love has officially been launched!  If you'd like to sign up, and you have been trained, head to SignUp Genius and put your name down for a slot or two.  If you haven't been trained, talk to Stephanie Nevels, Pam Talbott, or Mtr Megan for a quick primer on what to do.

Ongoing Concerns:

CHANCEL CHOIR welcomes new singers. For more information, please speak with Karen Hindenlang (Organist / Director of Music) after any service.

NEW PRAYER LIST If you don't hear a name you expected to, please call the office to have the name added.

NEW WEEKDAY SERVICE TIME Beginning this week (May 1), the Wednesday Noontime Service will move to 5:30 PM Tuesday. Kendal services will not change.

Holy Land Pilgrimage!  In 2020, Mtr Megan will lead a pilgrimage to Israel/Palestine from January 29-February 10.  We will go to Jerusalem, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Galilee, and all the places we read about in the Gospels.  Come and see the land that formed our faith, and those who keep it alive today!  Email Mtr Megan for more information.

COFFEE HOUR We need people to sign up to host coffee hour after the 10:30 am service. It doesn't need to be elaborate, just an opportunity for parish fellowship and to welcome newcomers. A few parishioners/ families hosting together makes it even easier. Please consider signing up on the sheet on the bulletin board in the Parish House. Sara and Pam will happily give you pointers!

ADULT FORUM Our Adult Forum book study for Lent is a reading and discussion of "Short Stories by Jesus, The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi" by Amy-Jill Levine, published by Harper, 2014. We will resume the week after Easter, so read the chapter about the Pharisee and tax collector!
