Happy April from the MU Career Center!

This month is always such a busy one as we get ready to wrap up the semester.  We know you have a lot to do but hope you'll take a minute to read through this month's newsletter to find out more about some great resources and upcoming events for you and your students!

As always, thanks for reading and for your support of career development at MU.

All our best,
The MU Career Center Team

MU Career Center Resources for Getting & Accepting The Job

Brooke Bassett, Junior in Strategic Communication

As you all know, this time of year is busy for students who are graduating. Some are just dipping their toes into the real world and some are diving head first into the deep. Either way, the Career Center has a plethora of resources for students who are graduating and accepting jobs. One resource we want to highlight is the Guide to Employer Communication. This resource describes everything from how to write cover letters and thank you letters to LinkedIn communication and interview follow-up. This resource provides step by step instructions as well as samples for students to follow along with which can be helpful for visual learners. We also want to highlight our Job Search Series handouts. At the Career Center, we have handouts that provide additional resources on a variety of specific topics, including finding jobs in Kansas City or St. Louis, or in Marketing, Health Science or Environmental careers, as a few examples. They are great for students who need a place to start their search.

Lastly, we get a lot of questions about salary negotiations and find that GlassDoor.com has some great resources. Here's a wonderful article on how to negotiate a salary that could be helpful for students, as well as our Guide to Accepting the Job.  As always, we also have trained Career Specialists who want to talk with students more in-depth! Please refer them our way!

Career Center Services: Now Available by Appointment!

The MU Career Center offers most of our services via drop-ins.  Students can still drop in to meet with a Career Specialist, but if they would like the accountability that a scheduled meeting provides, they now also have the option to book an appointment with a Career Specialist using MU Connect! For both drop-ins and scheduled appointments, students can meet with a Career Specialist to investigate future career options, discuss potential MU majors, take CliftonStrengths, review a resume, search for jobs, practice interviewing, and more!

To schedule an appointment:
  • Go to MU Connect (https://muconnect.missouri.edu/) and “Login Directly” on the lower left
  • Log in using MU Pawprint and Password
  • Click on the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top left
  • Select My Success Network
  • Search for “MU Career Center” and select MU Career Center
  • Select the blue “Schedule Appointment” button to schedule a meeting with a Career Specialist
  • Choose one of the options for career-related assistance
  • Select a time to schedule
Appointments and drop-ins with Career Specialists are available Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. during fall and spring semesters. Drop-in services will continue to be available during summer session, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. weekdays.

Note: Career Counseling is also available by appointment through MU Connect. These appointments are for students who would like ongoing/recurring meetings with a counselor who can provide more support around career and personal development concerns.

It's the perfect tool for students overwhelmed by the multitude of websites and software offered by the university. From MizzouOne, students can pay their tuition, check their grades, search for events, link to career and major exploration information, and much more! All the resources are just a search and a click away!

Work Study Positions - FREE Student Help for Your Area

You probably know that the federal government provides work-study opportunities to help students afford college expenses. The essential benefit of having a work-study job is to allow students to pursue academic excellence while having a flexible part-time job that will support them financially and provide work experience.

Did you know that you can hire a student to work for any program, department, or office? Faculty and/or staff can be designated as the supervisor in the Work Study Employment system. Students in work study positions can provide no expense assistance to employers in different areas like research, program development, office assistance, and more.

Being a full-time student and working can make life a jugging act, but gaining experience before they graduate will help students find employment upon graduation. Help students enter the workforce career-ready and with experience by offering a work-study position in your area. New students will start selecting positions on May 15th, so we encourage campus employers to post their positions ASAP!
