Waitsfield Elementary School Rocks!

April 25, 2019
Students are rolling into school on many different forms of wheels these days, but all on their own power. Its a great way to start the day!

Dear Friends and Families,
While Bike and Walk to School week is May 6 - May 10th, but with the sun coming up earlier and sidewalks clear of snow, now is a great time to change your morning routine (if you haven't already) to include getting to school under your own motor power in the morning. Its great for the body and brain--- and its fun too!
Last May, a few local families took on a "100 Miles in May" challenge, an initiative that began in Alaska to encourage youth to build the habit of daily physical activity. The premise of this challenge is that each person doing it commit to walk/run/bike/hike 100 miles over the month of May. Each family or individual can decide the terms of how to do this challenge (does soccer practice count in the miles?)  You can find a 100 Miles in May challenge tracking sheet here; we also have copies available at the front desk. We will recognize all students who complete this challenge (by bringing in a completed sheet with a "vouching" that it is accurate from a parent/guardian) at a future assembly.  Students can run the trail behind the school during recess, with permission. Biking/walking to school is a great way to log miles, as is the Mad River Running club!

Fly fishers from last spring's Inspiration Project.

Our annual Inspiration Project begins next Wednesday, May 1 and will run for the next three Wednesdays from 12:45 - 2:15 p.m. We have a range of offerings, from candle making to fly fishing, from golf to sewing, from cake decorating to theater improv and much more.  Students will sign up for their specific activity tomorrow. We are looking for volunteers to support these experiences; please contact Kathi or Kaiya if you're available to help support during this time. Thank you to the PTA for very generously funding this range of experiences.
Respectfully,    Kaiya Korb

We are looking for volunteers to support the Bridge Street Arts Fair in various ways-- we need you to make this event possible. Please see volunteer opportunities here and consider how you can help.

Be Tick Smart!    During these spring months, young ticks are very active. Wearing long pants, long sleeves and long socks will help to keep ticks off of your skin. When you come in, check your skin and your child's skin for ticks. Ticks are usually found behind the ears, around the armpits or groin area.  Cleanse the area with soap and water or rubbing alcohol before tick removal. Remove ticks using a fine tipped tweezer and pulling straight up. Cleanse the area with soap and water. Watch for signs of tick-borne illnesses for up to 30 days. Symptoms may include fever, rash, headache, fatigue, joint pain. Report any of these symptoms to your doctor.
Students spend time outdoors daily. Special activities that students may take part in include outdoor learning times and outdoor field trips. Make a habit of checking for ticks daily. Visit http://www.healthvermont.gov/disease-control/tickborne-diseases/information-ticks-vermont for more information.
